OH MY GOD!! I knew this album would be worth buying, but I didn't realise it would be THIS good.
You don't have to like Reggae to like Sean Paul, this is 'Dancehall', and it definitely makes you dance, I can't keep my bum still!!
The new single 'We Be Burnin'' is track 3 on this album, and it's a fine single to set the standard for this, the follow up album to his 'Dutty Rock' album, which sold more than 6 million copies, and won him a Grammy.
From his official UK website: "Born Sean Paul Henriques in Kingston, Jamaica on January 8, 1975, Sean Paul's lineage truly reflects Jamaica's national motto, "Out Of Many, One People." On his Portuguese father's side there is a family legend about the shipwreck of horse-rustling ancestors during a daring escape from bounty hunters. Sean's mother is a renowned Jamaican painter, and both his parents were noted athletes - a tradition Sean continued as a youth, representing his country in many international swim and water polo meets. After graduation from UTECH, he kept body and soul together by working as a chef and later as a teller in a bank."
Sean has had some flack for softening his language, the Jamaican language Patua,
but as he explains, Patua is an ever-changing language, and evolves from year to year, and is sometimes hard for people from outside Jamaica to understand. And, in order to make Dancehall more popular around the world, the language used needs to be more accessible to a broader audience.
"Dancehall reggae is not just about the killer riddims; people the world over love the way we speak. This music is here to kick up the bass and burn up the place. I'm talking on behalf of all dancehall." - Sean Paul
The Music - Now, unless you are from Jamaica, or quite familiar with Patua, it is an occupational hazard associated with listening to Sean Paul albums, that you kind of just 'get the drift' of each song, unless you sit with the lyrics, which are quite easy to work out, if you have them in front of you!
'Ever Blazin'' is quite a nice chilled intro to Dancehall, not so pumped up as some of the other tracks, but still a booty shakin' track. It's got some kooky sound effects in the background, they resemble electronic kittens!! I fear that I may say this a lot in this review, but all of these songs will have you shakin' your hips. I swear, if I keep listening to this album, I could enter the 'Dancehall Queen' dance contest! 'Eye Deh a Mi Knee' is quite a tough one to figure out quite what it is he is trying to tell us, but it must be good, because he's quite passionate about it! And, anyway, it sounds good! **(Added 12th October - The more I listen to this track, the more I love it, it's so good, I really wish I knew what he was singing about, 'cause I want to sing along!)**
'Never Gonna Be The Same' is a really beautiful chilled, slow track. I believe that it's about someone that Sean was close to, that has met an early end, he sings of loss, but still having memories. He mentions quite a few people's names, and prays that people that have passed on can "rest in peace until they meet again." A truly beautiful song. Sean Paul actually has a really good singing voice, and this song definitely shows it off really well. 'I'll Take You There' is a 'dark' sounding, very atmospheric track, with a really deep pumping base, his tracks usually do, but this one shows it off a bit more.
'Temperature' I LOVE THIS TRACK!!! I can really see this track being a huge dancefloor favourite. It has the most amazing bass, it's powerful enough to restart your heart!! And, believe it or not, quite memorable, catchy lyrics!! (If you listen hard enough and concentrate!!) My 3 year old twins LOVE this song, and I love it too, because they dance to it non-stop, I put it on repeat, and they dance 'til they drop, I think I've got a couple of young Justin Timberlakes on my hands here! They are eerily good for 3 year olds!
'Breakout' with the police sirens in the background, is a dark, pumping track, enticing the 'UK girls' to the dancefloor. 'Head to Toe' is a classic Sean Paul track, meaning that he mentions his own time no less than 10 times!! Good solid dancehall track, not one to sing along to, but still gets you wiggling those hips. 'Straight Up' is using this new bass that he seems to have discovered for this new album, and it's GOOD! A good dance track, excellent for showing off the bass in your bad boy racer car! For 'Send it On' it's more the lyrics and the way Sean uses his voice that hooks you to this song, as opposed to the bass or the music, definitely on par with the rest of the tracks.
Now, 'We Be Burnin'' is the first single off this album, and it is definitely a good choice. A brilliant dance track, with a great catchy hook. As I said earlier, definitely the right choice to set the standard for this album, as the rest of the songs are most definitely as good, if not better, in some cases.
There are 17 songs on this album altogether, and a short intro, I have reviewed some of the songs that I consider the 'best' tracks. He has collaborated with Wayne Marshall, identical twins of Nina Sky - 'Move Ya Body' fame, Tami Chynn and Looga Man & Kid Kurup for 4 of the 'feat.' tracks.
I definitely recommend this album to the folks who enjoy music with a deep, pumping bass. And to those who have bought some new music equipment and need to test out the bass, you'll definitely hear how good it is with these tracks!!
**Addition - 12th October - My Mom loves this album, she listened to it today. Now, she's 52 (sshhh!) Now, I'm not the kind of 23 year old that is embarrassed of my Mom liking the same music as me, it just means that she has ridiculously excellent music taste!!**
