The Pixies are a great band, and have the rare quality of lacking any sort of pretension at all. Making a living on catchy, hook-laden two-minute rock songs, songwriter Frank Black somehow manages to sing about such themes as physical violence and sexual deviance whilst making music which is constantly fun and accessible, and is free of the willfull snobbery that pervades a lot of modern rock.
"Trompe Le Monde" was the band's third full-length album, and although perhaps not as good as either of their era-defining predecessors, it's constantly entertaining and has a personality all of it's own. Musically, this is perhaps the most diverse set of songs the Pixies recordes, and the album also features wacky lyrical themes including alien-abduction (one of Frank Black's personal obsessions).
This album also features some of the Pixies' best rock moments - the raucous "Planet of Sound" is as good as anything they've ever done, and the thoroughly great "U-Mass" gives America's college system a lyrical mauling. Elsewhere, Black meditates on American Indian history (the sublimely eerie "The Navajo Know"), whilst guitarist Joey Santiago confirms his place as one of rock's true innovators making carving out his characteristics grating riffs.
Maybe not classic Pixies, but a hugely enjoyable album with a (slightly bizarre) big personality.
