Charismatic cello concerti - rarely played gems
Review of d\'Albert; Dohnányi; Enescu: Works for Cello and Orchestra by  Maestrolover

Advantages: Gorgeous music, played with much passion
Disadvantages: None really

...and this is evident here right from the start. There is some beautiful dialogue between solo cellist and orchestra in particular with the 1st clarinet - very well played by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Most of the time Carlos Kalmar keeps them on a tight leash, enabling clear and transparent textures, yet always allowing the soloist to sing through, but at one point where there is a fortissimo climax leading up to an ecstatic statement of the main theme - he lets the orchestra loose - and one can hear them revelling in the moment! Great climax which makes you wish you were playing! Listening to this easily accessible and instantly enjoyable piece, one wonders why on earth it is not more often played or heard. Perhaps it is because it has the most exquisitely subtle ending where the cello flies upwards into the heaven... Read review

Autumnal Thoughts Through Nostalgia
Review of Elgar: Cello Concerto; Sea Pictures by  berlioz

Advantages: It is simply one of the finest pieces of music ever written
Disadvantages: How dare you ask of any disadvantges!?!

...of the work in existence, neither are there any sketches left, but there were numerous mentions of the work in letters and diaries, such as the note from Alice when the conductor Landon Ronald came to visit on Elgar's sixty-second birthday on June 2, that Elgar played large chunks of the concerto on piano and three days later the cellist Felix Salmond came to try the work out on his cello and was apparently "delighted and enthusiastic." Elgar was enthusiatic as well and often was seen waking up at early morning, adding passages and orchestrating the work, and by late July he told Sidney Colvin he had "nearly completed a Concerto for Violoncello: a real large work and I think good and alive." He dedicated the concerto for Colvin and his wife Frances, and after a couple of additions that Salmond came out to try at Brinkwells, the score was ready... Read review

Not du Pré, But Still Cause For Celebration!
Review of Elgar: Cello Concerto; Arrangements for Cello and Orchestra by  zerbine28

Advantages: Highly burnished, engaging, musically intelligent and emotionally mature playing; beautiful tone is never saccharine.
Disadvantages: Nil.

...by many today, and the shadow it casts upon all future performers is not easily avoided. Well, with this new, all-Elgar CD recording for EMI (the same label that releases Ms du Pré's works), the thirty-year-old Ms Clein makes the Cello Concerto her own, but does so without ignoring the legacy of Ms du Pré. (She'd already played it before at age 16, which won her the BBC Young Musician Award.) The two women couldn't be more different in their playing styles, yet both are equally deserving of everyone's full attention. CLEIN vs. DU PRÉ Ms Clein's style hews far from the desperation that Ms du Pré brought to her relatively ragged version, with a tempestuousness that was scary in its immediacy. Similar to the du Pré entrance, Ms Clein's rapid attack in the concerto's opening bars sinks its hooks into you at once, and henceforth, it becomes... Read review
