revolution in North American television. In partnership with unsung hero Mark Frost, the visionary filmmaker David Lynch (Eraserhead,Blue Velvet) brought his dark and surreal perceptions to the small screen. 1980's TV had been dominated by the glossy soap operasDallasandDynasty:Twin Peakssubverted their formula and opened the door forNorthern ExposureandThe X Files. Essential to the show's impact was the extraordinarily atmospheric score by Angelo Badalamenti, and the fragile, little-girl-lost vocals of Julee Cruise. The main themes, portraying the town of Twin Peaks itself, and murdered teenager Laura Palmer, alternate between a lush, decadent and world-weary poetry and a fairytale innocence. While on three songs--"The Nightingale", "Into The Night" and the gorgeous "Falling"--Julee Cruise seems to summon ghosts out of the misty, autumnal air. Elsewhere the composer blends lonesome synthesisers with mournful solo instruments, creating otherworldly textures hinting at the dreamlike jazz to come in his score for the feature version,Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Other notable Badalamenti-Lynch collaborations includeLost HighwayandThe Straight Story. --Gary S. Dalkin

groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks, again uses the talents of Angelo Badalamenti to create a chilling backdrop to Lynch's dark psychosexual thriller. Film noir is once again the touchstone for this perfectly pitched score, and these 10 tracks stand repeated listening in their own right. This is in part due to the use of some top notch jazz players such as Buster Williams, Grady Tate, and Vinnie Bell, as well as vocalist Jimmy Scott's haunting delivery on "Sycamore Trees." Sax, vibes, upright bass, and percussion set a smoky atmosphere, and the eerie synthesizer and string arrangements augment the general spine-tingling melancholy and menace. Singer Julee Cruise also appears, lending angelic repression to "Questions in a World of Blue"; Lynch contributes compositions and percussion throughout this exercise in bleakness and love gone awry. --Derek Rath

Advantages: The most original, mind-blowing TV series of all time Disadvantages: None
A decade and a half having now passed since I first saw David Lynch's masterpiece TwinPeaks, I've decided at last to put pen to paper (in a virtual sense) and write something about this truly exceptional and extraordinary series.
"Exceptional" and "Extraordinary" are words that are perhaps overused these days in the English language; however, I remain, fifteen years later, utterly convinced that TwinPeaks deserved to be draped with such superlatives, and more. In a nutshell, this is in my experience the greatest TV drama series ever made. It is also so much more than a drama series, combining elements of the supernatural, of surreal and unfathomable events inextricably linked but in a way that defies explanation.
Before delving into the intricacies of this one-off work of genius, let me provide an introduction to the background ...

Advantages: Weird and cool Disadvantages: It was cancelled
TwinPeaks is a 90's TV series about a FBI agent's quest to solve the brutal murder of a homecoming queen in a sleepy American town called Twinpeaks. The sleepy town hides lots of dark secrets, which are exposed during the agent's investigation.
The homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, played by Sheryl Lee, is discovered to be far from perfect and was actually a wild teenager. The FBI agent, Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLauchlan, realises that no one in the town is perfect and has something to hide.
As well as investigating the murder of Laura Palmer, Cooper also investigates the reappearance of his old FBI colleague, Windom Earle, played by Kenneth Walsh. Earle has a vendetta against Cooper and will stop at nothing to ruin Cooper's life.
TwinPeaks ran for two series before it was cancelled. The series was created by David Lynch ...

Advantages: Having the episodes to watch back to back makes the story alot more understandable Disadvantages: Not a good idea to start watching unless you have the next box set.
If you liked TwinPeaks all those years ago when it was on TV your going to absolutely love it now. Having the box set makes the storyline alot easier to follow and once the music kicks in its like meeting an old friend.
If you havnt allready had the pleasure of TwinPeaks and you like fantasy, thriller or a good who done it, then this is deffinately for you. But be warned, this is not the norm. TwinPeaks had a cult following and may not appeal if you are bothered by the strange. There are twists and turns galore, along with the strangest characters you are ever likely to come accross.
TwinPeaks is a unique experience that i recomend to all who enjoy a touch of the strange. ...

Album Notes
Music composed by Angelo Badalamenti. Lyrics written by David Lynch. Personnel includes: Julee Cruise (vocals); Angelo Badalamenti (piano, synthesizer); Vinnie Bell, Eddie Dixon (electric guitar); Al Regini (flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone); Eddie Daniels (flute, clarinet); Kinny Landrum (synthesizer); Grady Tate (drums). David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS was, among other things, the first series to bring surrealism to prime time television. Angelo Badalamenti's score, on the other hand, was the first to introduce downtown post-modernism. Badalamenti's harmonic palette was straight out of '50s rock. But the resultant music was slow and doomy, a collage of shimmering synths, twangy Duane Eddy guitars, and finger snaps that seemed uncannily sinister. Highlights include the popular "Twin Peaks Theme," which manages the remarkable feat of being at once lush and minimalist, and "Into The Night," an unsettling combination of innocence and lasciviousness as sung by Lynch protege Julee Cruise.
Album Reviews
Q (5/95, p.122) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...David Lynch's eerily gripping television series, would have had considerably less impact without composer Angelo Badalamenti's dark, atmospherically-charged soundtrack..." Muzik (12/00, p.59) - Included in Muzik's "Top 10 Electronic Soundtracks" - "...Hypnotic, massively influential and coincidentally spawned Moby's GO..."
