Being a fan of UB40 since 1984 I thought it was about time I actually went to see them live.
I went last year (1999) to see them play at their sell out tour (the NEC in Brum)

something about being unemployed. The name UB40 comes from the file number of the form in Birmingham for unemployment benefits. This form can be seen on the cover of the band's first LP Signing Off, which announced to the world: We have a job now! In discussing their music, UB40 said We play Jazz-Dub Reggae, if you want to give it a name. Their texts are seeped in politics: racial justice (Tyler), exploitation and misery in the Third World (Food For Thought, Burden Of Shame) and indifference about the fate of the individual (One In Ten), just to name a few. The two Rockpalast concerts on this DVD took place in completely different milieus: The first one in 1981 at the Sartory-Sale in Cologne, where the festivities surrounding the Carnival season occur, the second one in 1982 on the Loreley where the enchantment of the famous Rock on the Rhine was given that day an extra sprinkling of magic dust with UB40's music. UB40 - who had improved musically from the year before - were, despite the seriousness of the lyrics, able to hold their own with the other artists, because the band's gentle pulsating music made people dance. The songs presented on the concerts both come from Signing Off (1981) and Present Arms (1982); the Loreley concert additionally includes pieces from UB44 (1982).Sartory-Sale Cologne - 19 July 198101. A group of local lads, who had nothing, but their love of reggae music, and their unemployment benefit made good. ...29 who grew up on UB40 to the younger 17 and 18 yr olds who have fallen in love with their music.
They started off the concert showign the labour of love video, before coming on stage to a huge welcome.
I was seated about half way on, so didnt get the chance to see my boys up close, but it was worth it.
I am definitely going to see them again when I get the chance, as soon as they announce another gig here. more

They are still great performers, playing a mix of their old classics like King Tyler red red wine to some of their new stuff from the new labour of love III album.
The whole arena was standing, singing, dancing along, the atmosphere was amazing (and i was wondering why id never been to see them before now!) The crowd were a mix of old and young, like me at 29 who grew up on UB40 to the younger 17 and 18 yr olds who have fallen in love with their music.

Advantages: Great songs, great music, serious message Disadvantages: Some of the songs have lost their context
of the country where there was a large black population and thus London and Birmingham were natural breeding ground for this music. London gave us the short-lived Black Slate and the longer lasting Misty In Roots and Aswad. Birmingham gave us notable acts such Steel Pulse and UB40.
UB40 were distinct from most of the rest in that they were a multiracial outfit consisting of 8 band members led by the two Campbell brothers Ali and Robin. Their sound was also a distinctive blend of the heavy reggae drum and baseline with Ska influenced brass section and melodic ballads. They are probably the best example of what some in the music press labelled misleadingly as 'White Reggae'.
