turntablist DJ Vadim encapsulates the ethic of leftfield hip-hop imprint Ninja Tune with a skill that leaves all but the brightest of his contemporaries in the shade. The public-service-announcement-style introduction to the opening "Till Suns In Your Eye" might announce that "Listening to music while stoned is a whole new world", but this no pastel-shaded chill-out sound: Vadim's production vibrates with sharp, often hilarious detail, absurd sounds and baroque instruments--baritone sax, fingerpicked harp, keening violin--wriggling like maggots through a stable hip-hop framework of beats and breaks. "Ghetto Rebels" throws a surrealist spin on the concept of street-level rhyming, the grind of a pneumatic drill backing Phil Life Cypher's comically childish rebellion rhymes. And on "Taa Fun Aiye", the presence of Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys--here guesting on guitar--is a big Welsh signpost to this record's boundary-bending eclecticism. Despite the fact it leans heavily on an ever-shifting line-up of special guests, The Art of Listening is never over-egged. DJ Vadim emerged from behind the Iron Curtain and settled in London, bringing a talent for Eastern Bloc academic posturing to U.K. hip-hop's volatile verbalism. After establishing his reputation with unique turntable tricks and minimalist grooves and setting up the groundbreaking Jazz Fudge label, the erstwhile Vadim Peare turned his attentions outward. He has since become a hip-hop ambassador, scouting scattered hip-hop communities for the freshest rhymes, the fastest fingers, and the phattest sounds. DJ Vadim's select crew gives USSR: LIFE FROM THE OTHER SIDE a friendly, familial feel. Among the rappers, vocalists, and turntablists strutting their stuff over Vadim's terse, abstract "Russian Percussion" are artful scratcher DJ Primecuts, Company Flow's El-P and BMS (spilling lyrics like liquid on the fantastic "Viagra"), Swollen Members, Sarah Jones (whose acid-tongued delivery illuminates "Your Revolution"), Jupiter Jam & J.A.E., Blurum 13, Iriscience, Toastie Taylor, and Jazz Fudge veteran Blade. Assuming the role of the magnanimous producer, Vadim sets the stage for his skilled associates and watches from the wings as they do their thing. The emphasis is on fun and funk, with cute, sample-based sketches and fade-out instrumentals linking smoldering cuts like "English Breakfast," "Friction," "The Pact," "It's Obvious," and Blade's adoring "From Russia With Love."
