Ultimate Melly, The - George Melly

Advantages: Good Fun, Swinging Jive time music, humorous
Disadvantages: perhaps a little close to the bone lyrically at time, but only if you're prudish!

...One of the great Trad. Jazz players of our time, this collection has him at his dandy, playboy best. These tracks are uplifting, swinging numbers, perfect for jiving on a Friday or Saturday night, but equally fitted to a lazy Sunday morning with a copy of the paper and breakfast in bed. This compilation covers the earlier years of George's career, so his voice is at it's best. Though even in his later life (anyone who can perform at 80 with dementia and lung cancer and still be captivating has something special about them) he managed to wow the crowds. These tracks are the best vocal performances Geoerge ever gave in my opinion. Melly's trademark tongue in cheek lewdness features in force, tracks like "Ma Reiney's Black Bottom" and "I'm A Ding Dong Daddy " are sure to raise a smile as the hips are swinging. ...When I was 17 I attended an art exhibition opening and had the fortune to meet the late George Melly. He would have been pushing 70 by then, but still I found myself sitting on his knee, flirting shamelessly with him, and even wearing his hat. Sadly the photos of this meeting are long lost, so I have nothing but memories that are now hazy after 14 years and an abiding affection for jazz, which I felt obliged to find out more about after meeting the legendary Melly. I've also long had a bit of a closet affection for soul-- proper soul not the rubbish that passes for it these days. So I was expecting to like this album a lot. And I did! But as I'm not someone who often listens to this type of music, I was also expecting to find it hard to listen to from start to finish in one sitting as I would need to in order to write this review... Advantages: Most of Michael's Songs From His Career, Bonus DVD and Booklet
Disadvantages: None - Maybe One or Two Songs Are Missing

...I love Michael Jackson! I know everyone has their opinion of him. Most people I have spoken to have said they love him, can't make their mind up, or hate him. I think he is a brilliant singer, songwriter, dancer and producer. He's one of the most talented people in the world today. (I usually write a lot about each song in my Album reviews, but I wont write about each song in this case, as it will go on forever and ever as there is nearly 60 songs!
