This is one of the most recent collections from Ludovico Einaudi, and just as his previous albums, it is very crisp, pretty, relaxing music that takes the mind to peaceful places.
For anyone unfamiliar with this artist he is an Italian pianist composer, who would fall into the category of modern classical, possibly minimalist.
"In general I don't like definitions, but 'Minimalist' is a term that means elegance and openness, so I would prefer to be called a Minimalist than something else." -Ludovico Einaudi.
He has written several film scores, including Doctor Zhivago (2002), and some Italian films, he has also released several solo albums (including some duets). Una Mattina is his seventh album, and contains all new tracks.
'Una Mattina' translates as 'one morning' and the music is as simple as this title. It is another of his solo piano albums, although it does feature the cello in some tracks. It flows where you expect it to, although not in a boring way. The music ripples along, and the cello brings real emotion in certain tracks. The subtle variations in the music and tempo keep it moving along, but tie the music together in a suite of pieces. The music is very calming and relaxing, and evokes feelings of peace and tranquility. It is suitable as background music, or simply to listen and relax to.
A few people might recognise one of the tracks, Nuvole Bianche from a TV advert for Baci chocolates, used at Christmas time last year. This and 'Ora' are my favourite tracks, although 'A Fuoco' featuring cello makes a close second. The cello tracks (played by Marco Decimo) are an absolutely beatiful combination of piano and cello and bring a perfect flow to the music.
For any musicians that enjoy these pieces, I would also recommend the sheet music book to accompany the CD as this has given me as many happy hours playing as well as listening to the music.
