masterpiece, exhibit A would surely be Autechre. From the title on down (Untilted--geddit?), this is an album that will have conservative rock fans pulling off their ears, howling at the lack of 'real tunes' contained herein, whereas those with ears more accustomed to off-kilter beats, strange noise and a penchant for finding melody and beauty buried in the near-random soundscapes, will have a field day. The tracks ('songs' doesn't quite seem like a justifiable description) contained on here echo some of Autechre's finest work, both as artists and as remixers. Opener "LCC" melts from its initial metallic percussion loop into a softer, textured ambient mood piece, and the running time is enough to allow the song to complete a gradual shift, without sounding laboured (indeed, most of the tracks on here stretch to nearly 10 minutes, with closing masterpiece "Sublimit" - reminiscent of Tortoise's "Djed" in its multipart Teutonic structure--clocking in at 15). As the album flies by, so do the various sounds, ping-ponging between channels like super-fast flies and adding to the ambience sculpted within. Danceable it ain't, but as a think-piece, it's very effective. --Thom Allott
Album Notes: Over a decade after its inception, Autechre remained at the forefront of electronica. While the English duo's early work (1995's AMBER, for example) boasted a warmer, more organic variation on the forward-thinking work of genre-mates like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, the landmark double-disc TRI REPETAE++ found them exploring colder digital vistas with otherworldly, almost machine-like textures. UNTILTED (2005) bears many of the sonic hallmarks of that album (namely the highly processed, digitized quality of the sound), but there is something new here as well.
Album Reviews: Mojo (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[With] great globules of synthetic sound filtered and processed into a litany of strange-yet-compelling landscapes."
Advantages: Unique, elegant, dreamlike Disadvantages: Tracks 2 and 10 are flawed
...Incunabula was the first album released by Autechre in 1993.
As an interesting side note, Incunabula means "swaddling clothes" in Latin.
Sean Booth and Robert Brown, a.k.a Autechre, are true masters of electronica. Much like Richard Devine, Mira Calix, Datach'i, Venetian Snares and Squarepusher, these guys expand the clichéd genres of I.D.M (Intelligent Dance Music) and electronica in general.
Incunabula is the first of 15 others works by Autechre.
It is a tremendously influential piece of work and most importantly, is the root and core to all other Autechre releases; as well as a key to unlocking their frame of mind.
Usually, you will find 3 kinds of Autechre fans:
- Those who prefer their first 7 works; Incunabula, Basscadet, Anti, Amber, Tri Repetae, Garbage and Anvil Vapre.
- Those who are mystified by Envane and Peel...

Advantages: Original. Intelligent. A specific sound. Disadvantages: Track 10 is a bit dissapointing.
...Autechre's textural album.
Amber is Autechre's 4th work; 2nd album.
Sean Booth and Robert Brown released Incunabula back in 1993, a roaring success. This album would attract quite a following. They would then concentrate their sounds and release 2 very singular Eps.
The first of these, Basscadet, featured 5 completely different remixes of their ground-breaking track by the same name. These were so plural in their construction that the whole concept of remixing the same material never got boring. Once again, the duo illustrate their sheer genius.
The second Ep would be a tiny 3-titled oeuvre, acting as a protest against the "British Criminal Justice and Public order act 1994". This particular law had prohibited gatherings of people listening to repetitive music. Autechre would then release two techno-based tracks and a third...

Advantages: Extremely good quality elecrronica Disadvantages: May not appeal to all
...Autechre, consist of just 2 artists, whom also work under the alternative alias Gescom on the skam record label, this release under the highly successful Warp label is in my opinion the best of Autechre's long playing releases.
I own the whole undeleted Autechre discography and out of them all i find this release the most varied and satisfying, when compared to incunabula which is more synth based and less aggressive, this album may be more appealing to a broader base of music fans. This is by no means mainstream music but shows Autechre's full range of talent. The sleeve design created by by the highly successful Chris Cunningham, responsible for the aphex twin come to daddy video, along with Bjork's 'all is full of love' music video.
This in an electronic classic, and though some tracks are quite noisy and glitchy, this isnt too...
