Album Reviews: Mojo (5/02, p.120) - "...Captured the weekend style, philosophy and mating habits of a generation of West Indian teens, creating a snapshot as charmingly naive and culturally valuable as The Beach Boys' depictions of Californian surf culture..."
Advantages: The song itself, and this rendition is quite pleasing...plus it's all for charity! Disadvantages: It's Westlife, and not really a typical single for them. The appeal is exclusively linked to this particular track.
...Ciao's very own piagetclot set a "guilty pleasures" challenge recently, but since there are very few of mine which are not already known, it proved trickier than you might have imagined.
Thank god for Westlife, then. Yes, you read that right. In one of life's perverse little twists, those nice boys from the Emerald Isle - who love their mothers and tuck themselves up in bed by 9 o'clock every night - have decided to release a single that I actually love listening to. The shame. The horror.
This review is about that particular single, Uptown Girl, and that single only.
The song dates back to 1983, when its writer and original performer Billy Joel took it to No.1 in the UK charts (but, oddly, only #3 in America). It remained there for 5 straight weeks, but lost out to Culture Club's Karma Chamleon for the title of that year...

Advantages: great upbeat song, fun, good video Disadvantages: none!
...Uptown Girl was originally written by Billy Joel and was re-released in 2001 by Westlife for Comic Relief.
The song lasts for 3 - 4 minutes.
Each member of Westlife have taken on a part to sing solo in the song and they all sing their parts well.
The song is about a man who isn't so "uptown" liking an "uptown" girl and how he wants to go out with her. I think they do actually go out and that's why he says "she's my uptown girl".
The video of Uptown Girl features Westlife working as waiters in downtown cafe, Claudia Schiffer as the Uptown Girl and 5 "uptown" business men who obviously don't belong in there. They come in a take the mickey out of the waiters and then at the end, the uptown girl goes off with the waiters instead of the business men and they can't believe it.
The song is an upbeat song and is great to dance...
