... ...I have chosen to review Use Your Illusion 1. I hope I do it justice. I also hope that the late John Entwistle will look upon it as a fitting tribute. Music is everything and great musicians are as close to a god as a man can get in my eyes.
Right let the games begin, grab some Jack Daniel’s and read on.

Advantages: 80’s revivals mean it’s almost cool again to like these boys, stay ahead of the curve Disadvantages: Attempts to sing like Axl Rose can seriously damage your health
...get a copy of this Use Your Illusion II in 1991, the year of its release & it was so good that my best friend stole it from me. He issued a categorical denial but I knew that the temptation of these boys for a pubescent teenager with plenty of angst (you could have guessed it to look at him) was bound to find its way out through the vulgar brilliance of a shameless bunch of extroverts.

Civil War is the Guns’ Stairway To Heaven - ostensibly it’s a bit of a singalong, a song of protest, the Cool Hand Luke sample proves that the group are innovative and full of new ideas as does to Slash, almost magically, giving way to Rose midway through the first line of each verse. Dizzy Reed's barnstorming piano gives the song another counter-melody for us to get our teeth ...

THE VERDICT
Use Your Illusion 2 is generally regarded as the better of the 2 Illusion albums but I would have to disagree. I much prefer this one. Alright number 2 contains all the 'biggies' but its for that reason that I much prefer this album. 'Use Your Illusion 1' has a much rockier feel to it. I think that the rest of the band (not just Axl) have been allowed to flex their creative muscles and the result is a great mix of epics, ballads, ...

...awful). ‘Don’t Cry’ featured on Use Your Illusion 2 and is featured here as well in identical form, except for some different lyrics. Its interesting to the hear both once or twice to see the difference but ultimately it would have made more sense just to stick with one version. For al my criticism I still think this is a great album, I just believe that if the band had maybe concentrated on producing one album from the material available, and avoiding covers and ‘alternative versions’ they could have produced another truly classic album like Appetite For Destruction, rather than two good albums. ...

...higher content of sucessful singles. Use Your Illusion 1 is a white knuckle ride right from the word go. Guns'N'Roses continue their trademark of starting each album with a BANG, Right Next Door To Hell being no exception. However this album does contain BALLADS. Use Your Illusion 1 was an opportunity for Izzy to show off his vocalistic talents and that was exactly what he did in Dust N' Bones, YOu Aint The First and Double Talkin' Jive.
Guest Vocals from Alice Cooper on The Garden and from Shannon Hoon in Don't Cry, The Garden and You Aint the first, proved that other famous names were anxious to stake their claim in G'N'R's work, which is understandable due to it fast becoming ...
