After 23 years as Duke Ellington's principal soloist Johnny Hodges decided to branch out ... more
on his own as a band leader. Less than five years later he was back in the Ellington fold. This album comes from his last year as leader in his own right. Hodges may have left Ellington but the maestro's music was never far away from his thinking. For this album he asked two of his Ellington colleagues--Jimmy Hamilton and Harry Carney--to sit in with his seven-piece band. In addition three other sidemen had been Ellingtonians, trumpeter Shorty Baker, trombonist Lawrence brown and drummer Louie Bellson. So this is in effect an Ellington splinter group in all but name and when Hodges eases into "Warm Valley" the picture is complete. There are some compelling bluesy small band jump pieces and a cover version of "Skokiaan", a hit of the day. But the central work is an 18-minute ballad medley featuring the leader (he plays "Sweet Lorraine" and "All Of Me"), Carney, Hamilton, Baker and pianist Richie Powell. Hodges's tenorsaxist at the time was John Coltrane, but his playing is confined to some background work. The tenor solos are played by Jimmy Hamilton. --Steve Voce

JohnnyBe Good is the second book by Paige Toon (Heat Magazine's reviews editior) , her first being Lucy In The Sky. JohnnyBe Good was released in 2008. I had already read Lucy In The Sky and absolutely loved it , so when I heard Paige Toon had another chick-lit book out , I immediately logged onto play.com and bought it for a reduced price of £3.99 instead of the recommended £6.99.
Being slightly celebrity-obsessed , this book was a useful source to me , providing me with interesting information as to what goes on in the world of celebrity. There were so many ...
Advantages: Fantastic story, great characters, update on her previous novel! Disadvantages: The way it ended!
Sometimes, an author releases a superb debut novel, so much so that I go out of my way to pre-order their next release, because I'm so hopeful it'll be as good as the debut. Paige Toon's debut 'Lucy in the Sky' was one such book, and when I discovered her next release on Amazon, I quickly pre-ordered it for a bargain price. It was delivered on the day of release, and I excitedly set about reading it, looking forward to the book to come.

Advantages: Nice smell, areas where hair WAS removed felt silky soft, wipes do remove excess wax Disadvantages: Too many areas where hair WASN'T removed, price, speed, pain
Hi...
Thought I'd share my (very recent) experience of Veet Ready ToUse Wax Strips.
Just to make clear now, the strips I used were part of the pink Complete Body Kit, consisting of 20 leg strips, 12 bikini/underarm strips, and 4 Perfect Finish wipes, and claiming tobe effective on hair as short as 2mm.
I'm 17 years old, normal, and tobe honest, quite an optimist, so this is the first almost negative review I've given anything. The 'satisfactory' was moved up from a 'poor' because I felt mean!
Usually, I'd use Veet cream (works like magic, if you're wondering) , but as I was in Boots to stock up these caught my eye. They were on a discount, and I'd wanted to try waxing, so I thought I'd give it a go. They cost me around £4-5, which, believe it or not, was half price.
The strips themselves smelt nice, and the instructions were ...

Album Notes
Johnny Hodges & His Orchestra: Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone); Harold "Shorty" Baker (trumpet); Lawrence Brown (trombone); Jimmy Hamilton (clarinet); Richard Powell, Call Cobbs (piano); John Williams (bass); Louis Bellson (drums). Recorded in Los Angeles, California on July 2 and August 5, 1954. Includes liner notes by Cliff Preiss. A superaltive remaster of the innovative American saxophone player's popular mid 50s album; includes "Warm Valley" and "Sweet As Bear Meat." 2003, Japanese import. Johnny Hodges, one of Duke Ellington's best-known right-hand men, took a hiatus from the Duke's orchestra in the mid-1950s. USED TO BE DUKE was recorded during this time, and contains all the smooth alto saxophone magic for which Hodges is known. Flanked by a fine group of musicians and a four-strong horn line-up (including, interestingly, John Coltrane), Hodges plays it relatively straight, treating standards and originals with his characteristic warmth. There's plenty of swing and sweet melodic playing here, and the 2009 reissue, which features bonus tracks, will delight any Hodges fan.
