Vampire Weekend, a band from New York, started out in 2006 and released a few songs but this album which is their debut album was not released until January 2008.
I bought this album two weeks ago and have listened to it a number of times and really enjoyed it. The music is uplifting and easy to listen to. The genre of music is quite a mix its mainly indie with some uplifting afro beats. With one song even reminding me very much of a traditional Slovenian dance I saw! Some of the lyrics are a little bizzare but it all adds to the individuality and uplifting style brought to the album by the band.
The songs on the album are as follows:
1. Mansford Roof - A fairly short song but puts you in a good mood for the rest of the album and gives you a taste of whats to come.
2. Oxford Comma - Quite a well known song if you listen to the radio alot and was recently released in May. This is one of my favourite songs it sounds very different to songs I have heard before and the lyrics are just great.
3.A-Punk - Works well this song with a good beat in the background and changing throughout the song from a slow to pace to a much faster moving one.
4. Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa - Listed as the 67th out of 100 best songs in 2007 by the Rolling Stones. This is also the tune that reminds me of Slovenia! It really is a catchy little tune with alot of Reggae style drum beat in it.
5. M79 -In this song the band uses the pauses well in between each verse with a change in drum beat and the sound of violins which work well
6. Campus - A catch tune with some easy lyrics that will get in your head!
7. Bryn - To me this song does not really stand out to me either way but still a good song!
8. One (Blakes got a new face) - This song Im not as keen on as the others on the album. It still has a catch tune but just a bit repetitive in places for me.
9. I stand corrected - This song starts of very slowly and quiet and gets you listening after just hearing so many upbeat songs. A soft drum beat then begins and then the song starts to unfold more. The way the music is been played goes well with the lyrics.
10. Walcott - Some bizzare lyrics in this song about getting out of a place called Cape Cod!
11. The kinds don't stand a chance - A slightly slower song from the rest but still just as good as the rest. All the different melodies and instruments used in it I think make a good end to the album.
This album is fairly short with the longest song only lasting 4.14minutes. Because of the uplifting music I would recommend it for the beginning of a party to get everyone in a good mood and tapping their feet!
