So it is time for another op, well I have decided to a crack down on my CD’s that I own, and let me tell you there are quite a few. As some of you may now I have an extremely wide taste in music, (Eva Cassidy and now Groove Armada!)? It is quite amazing actually; I can listen to classical and then turn on pop, dance or soul. This is what I adore about music, it is what you make it, you decide, and you stay in control.
I was first introduced to Groove Armada when I bought ‘Sky’ magazine (anyone remember that?) and it came with a free CD. It had a wicked remix of ‘If Everybody Looked The Same’ and so I splashed out and got the album. When I first listened I was impressed, second time I was shocked and third amazed. This album releases new experiences every time you listen …
1. Chicago – This track starts really well, it has the sound of a car engine revving up and an eerie sound in the background that sounds great mixed together. It then starts to get beaty and pick up and you here a cool keyboard solo. It sounds really good and with all the contrasting sounds together it sounds first-class. It stays very much the same for most of the song, a few variances, but other wise it is very good. 9/10
2. Whatever, Whenever – A weird song, it starts out like it is being played backwards, but it isn’t. There are actually
words on this song and they sound good. The words do have meaning and if you listen they make a lot of sense. They are really good, very smooth, laid back and easy. The song is so cool; it is very easy going and is one of those songs for before you go out Friday night. Wicked. 10/10
3. Dusk You & Me – The excellent thing about Groove Armada is that their music can be ‘pumping’ but also cool and chilled. They can also mix this blend and it doesn’t sound too much or wrong. This song is quite superior; I get the feeling of ‘posh’, high-class restaurant. I am not sure why, but it is a very trouble-free song. The keyboard and other instruments balance well with the few vocal sounds in the background. Overall this song is very good, even though for me it does drag on a tiny bit to long. 8/10
4. Pre 63 – Not to keen on this song, I don’t like the beginning. The trumpet and keyboard sound stupid. It does develop by adding more instruments, but you can still here the awful beginning sound. The over tune is great; it is so good, the ‘flute’ sound and the beat is really good. Stupid talking in the middle spoils all this. It is good how they are integrating ideas, but they should not mix their great talent with stupid ideas.
5. If Everybody Looked the Same – My favourite!!! This song is so cool, you might actually know it, it is on a car advert, and I love the song! Honestly, it has a really good beat, some cleverly composed lyrics and a great selection and mixture of sounds and elements. The sounds blend together really well, modern electrical sounds and a piano. It is such a good song! 10/10
6. Serve Chilled – The start of the song is very quite, it kind of builds up, it is reminds me of under water sounds, like the fake ones you hear at water worlds. Then the drums start playing and the song ‘starts’. It is so chilled it is amazing. This song is like pure heaven. It is like reminisce of sunny days on the beach. 7/10
7. I See You Baby – This is a cool song, many of you again might have heard it, a very popular song, it is great remixed as well. The song has a really upbeat funky sound to it. It is incredible the sound is so funky. The song doesn’t seem to drag on, it gets better and better. The song has a great structure and some good carefully planned ideas in it. The thing I find with Groove Armada is that they can mix and they can achieve great things whatever style, mixing funky and dance. 8/10
8. A Private Interlude – This has a good start, it reminds me of an action film. The start is one of the two guys mixing on the decks and it sounds so good. The sound is cleverly mixed; you have the keyboard in the background and the mixing over it. They blend so well. One point about the song, it does drag on, and as there are no words it seems like a really long song, which is a shame. The song could have done with being a lot shorter. 6/10
9. At The River – This is my second to favourite. It is another chilled/upbeat song. The backing sound is again like it is being played backwards, but then it stops. It is so cool; the trumpet that starts playing about a third of the way through is really good. It is defiantly a song to be remembered, an anthem. It is defiantly a song to make love to, smooth as jazz. The words are really cool as well. They are so cutting, so perfect. The song has a great intermingle of sounds, lyrics and instruments. 9/10
10. In My Bones – A weird title for a song, but I think it shows how natural the music business comes to them. The song starts out so quiet, you can barely hear it and then it starts o pick up, you can hear it a bit more. The main sound is like 80’s dance pop! It is weird, it really sounds like it, but when you listen it isn’t. It is a continuous beat and it is quite boring, but they do add a variety in the sounds, which makes it better. The original sound does come back, but goes again. Overall this song is so chilled, you just have to love it! 8/10
11. Your Song – An upbeat song. It is great, the album starts beaty, goes groovy, smooth, chilled and it varies all the time. It doesn’t sound stupid either, it sounds just right. I can’t say a lot about the song, it is just so cool and steady. You must get this album to experience the smoothness and roughness of it. 7/10
12. Inside My Mind (Blue Skies) – The last song! Oh no! A bit of a let down to end the album, I was hoping for something ‘pounding’ with energy, but they opted for smooth, chilled. It is good, but when you have been waiting for it, it kind of lets you down. The song has a good little beat, nothing heavy, just right. There are a few lyrics, a few different sounds, just nice to finish on. 7/10
Overall the album is great, it is a pleasant blend/mixture of music. I love listening to this album, there are strong and weak tracks, but it does hold out. It can’t be classed as dance music; there is too much variance in it. See you later!!!
