...Goodfella's which took place over a thirty year time frame, apart from the opening sequence the Departed takes place in a contemporary Boston setting therefore the Soundtrack is not used so much to convey a sense of time and place, put it still manages to fit the film very well.
My initial disappointment with this soundtrack is that it didn't feature probably one of the best pieces of music used in the Film! The opening sequence were Jack Nicholson narrates the background to the story is heard over the Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter' one of their most powerful and iconic songs (As anyone who has seen the Documentary of the same name will attest to) this song sets the mood for the whole movie and apart from licensing difficulties I can see any reason why it was excluded.

The highlights of this album are 'My baby loves loving', 'United we stand' & 'I can't tell the bottom form the top' which brings out the best in Elton's singing. The original version of 'Spirit in the sky' by Norman Greenbaum is one of my favourites & although Elton's version isn't so good its no fault of his, as his vocals are spot on but the backing track is weak. His version of the Bee Gee's song is fantastic & almost like Robin Gibb.

Advantages: New facets of rock's greatest Disadvantages: Not for the casual fan
...of "Step Inside Love" and "Come And Get It", which became hits respectively for Cilla Black and Badfinger. The others include a rock'n'roll medly included during the difficult "Let It Be" sessions - Jive Bunny, Status Quo, you weren't the first, were you - and an amusing version of "Get Back", with Paul ad-libbing vocals at the end just as the police were coming to order them off the roof during that famous last live open-air performance in January 1969. The main exclusive is John Lennon's "What's The New Mary Jane", a much-hyped 'rarity' which had been rumoured as a possible Plastic Ono Band single at the time - featuring John, George, Yoko and roadie Mal Evans, but neither Paul nor Ringo.
Like its predecessors, it's a compelling insight into what made the Fab Four tick. You won't get Beatles songs polished to perfection, but you shouldn...
