I think I should have stayed
Review of Departed, The - Various Artists by sigmatech

Advantages: Some good tracks
Disadvantages: No Gimme Shelter

...Goodfella's which took place over a thirty year time frame, apart from the opening sequence the Departed takes place in a contemporary Boston setting therefore the Soundtrack is not used so much to convey a sense of time and place, put it still manages to fit the film very well. My initial disappointment with this soundtrack is that it didn't feature probably one of the best pieces of music used in the Film! The opening sequence were Jack Nicholson narrates the background to the story is heard over the Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter' one of their most powerful and iconic songs (As anyone who has seen the Documentary of the same name will attest to) this song sets the mood for the whole movie and apart from licensing difficulties I can see any reason why it was excluded. Track 1 Comfortably Numb - Rodger Waters, Van Morrison & The Band 8... Read review

You gotta start somewhere
Review of Chartbusters Go Pop - Elton John by ScottishWestie

Advantages: Rare recordings, variety of songs, professional act
Disadvantages: Naff cover, silly album sleeve notes

...Mink) Young gifted & black (Bob & Marcia) In the summertime (Mungo Jerry) Up around the bend (Creedence C' Revival) Snake in the grass (Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich) Neanderthal man (Hotlegs) She sold me magic (Lou Christie) Come & get it (Badfinger) Love of the common people (Nicky Thomas) Signed sealed delivered (Stevie Wonder) It's all in the game (Four Tops) Yellow river (Lou Christie) The highlights of this album are 'My baby loves loving', 'United we stand' & 'I can't tell the bottom form the top' which brings out the best in Elton's singing. The original version of 'Spirit in the sky' by Norman Greenbaum is one of my favourites & although Elton's version isn't so good its no fault of his, as his vocals are spot on but the backing track is weak. His version of the Bee Gee's song is fantastic & almost like Robin Gibb. Ironically... Read review

The end of the long and winding road
Review of Beatles Anthology Vol.3, The - Beatles (The) by JOHNV

Advantages: New facets of rock's greatest
Disadvantages: Not for the casual fan

...of "Step Inside Love" and "Come And Get It", which became hits respectively for Cilla Black and Badfinger. The others include a rock'n'roll medly included during the difficult "Let It Be" sessions - Jive Bunny, Status Quo, you weren't the first, were you - and an amusing version of "Get Back", with Paul ad-libbing vocals at the end just as the police were coming to order them off the roof during that famous last live open-air performance in January 1969. The main exclusive is John Lennon's "What's The New Mary Jane", a much-hyped 'rarity' which had been rumoured as a possible Plastic Ono Band single at the time - featuring John, George, Yoko and roadie Mal Evans, but neither Paul nor Ringo. Like its predecessors, it's a compelling insight into what made the Fab Four tick. You won't get Beatles songs polished to perfection, but you shouldn... Read review
