Her last album, 1999’s ‘When I look in your eyes’ sold two million copies world-wide and won Krall the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. For those who haven’t heard much of Diana Krall, I will tell you a little about her background. Diana Krall was born in British Columbia, Canada, in 1966. She was born into a musical family and was surrounded by music from an early age. She started piano lessons aged six and soon became a great pianist. When she reached 16, Diana was given a scholarship to study music Berkley collage of music in Boston. She soon discovered her gift for jazz piano, she was also encouraged to sing and it soon became clear that Diana had a great gift for music and would be a successful artist. Advantages: Relaxing, sophisticated, easy to listen to, Diana's sexy voice
Disadvantages: Not much variety, could do with a few up tempo tracks

...to up beat swing. Her latest creation, however, contains only slow to medium paced ballads with some interjections of bossa nova. There are no really fast swing numbers. S’Wonderful and I Remember You are both light bossa nova tunes, with lovely accompaniment of flute and jazz guitar. Diana’s voice sounds deep, clear and sexy as always. Most other renditions of Gershwin’s ‘S’wonderful’ are very up beat and fast, but this version is laid back and relaxed. Love Letters, Cry Me A River, The Night We Called It a Day and Maybe You’ll be There are all beautiful love songs. Diana Krall’s vocals really do suit ballads, she always sounds so relaxed and as if she doesn’t have to try. She has real warmth and feeling in these songs. Advantages: A wonderful Jazz album with emotion
Disadvantages: A couple of dud notes?

.... Departure Bay (10) 13. I’ll Never Be The Same (3) As you can see from my ratings of each of the tracks, they do vary in what I like but Departure Bay is the best song. The reason I found this was I read the biography and information about this album from the Diana Krall web site. The ste told me that this song was all about Diana losing her mother and that this song was about her first Christmas without her but remembering the past and how everything used to be so happy. I could feel my eyes beginning to swell up as I read this and was listing to the song at the same time. The songs I gave a rating of (3) to, are all good tracks but not really something that gave me much emotion towards. Diana is a brilliant pianist and the solo's could be award winning. I am not a singer but do like to 'hum' the tunes if I am in a happy mood... Read review
