Hannush. This is a single disc distillation from Rhino's MOS' SCOCIOUS two-CD anthology. The 16 songs span over 20 years of music by New Orleans' own Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John. He had more than a dozen years of experience under his belt when he emerged as Dr. John in the late '60s. His colorful, festooned stage shows carried him well into the '70s, after which he turned out some stellar solo piano works (DR. JOHN PLAYS MAC REBENNACK, THE BRIGHTEST SMILE IN TOWN), fine New Orleans funk (TELEVISION) and even some standards (IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD). This anthology neatly encapsulates everything that makes Dr. John one of the preeminent exponents of New Orleans music. For a deeper journey, the aforementioned double disc set is recommended, as it also includes some of his earliest work which date from the '50s, when he was still a teenager yet already a force to be reckoned with.[Reviews]Q (8/95, p.139) - 4 Stars - Excellent - ...both dazzles as a cultural document and makes one want to splash out on the parent albums...n

Advantages: Good Early stuff Disadvantages: Doesn't cover everything
...The Meters were a fantastic band and were pioneers of the art form. They worked with Dr. John and Allen Toussaint on 'Right Place', a classic New Orleans record, and wrote one of the Funkiest albums of all time, 'Rejuvination'.
This record covers some of their earlier work. 'Cissy Strut' is an absolute classic. Its a killer riff and is so simple. Everything in the band clicks. Song after song on this album is very simple but funky as hell. 'Sophisticated Cissy' and 'Ease Back' are also classics. They also do a couple of covers on the album, one being 'Sing a simple song' by sly and the family stone. There extremely tight and precise style suites the record and helps to make this an interesting compilation from one of the best New Orleans bands ever.
This is a great place to start, and i highly recommend it....

Advantages: Consistent, often brilliant songs from start to finish Disadvantages: None
...For years "Revolver" languished in the shadow of "Sergeant Pepper", but now it seems generally recognised as the musical peak of the Beat;les' career, They were still playing their own instruments throughout, barring the occasional guest musician; they were writing great songs; and they hadn't yet started to get self-indulgent. John Lennon was aeons ahead of the time with the extraordinary, trippy "Tomorrow Never Knows" (what was that about Tibetan monks, John?) and writing rockers with attitude like "And Your Bird Can Sing", Paul was reaching new heights with the exquisite "For No One" and "Eleanor Rigby", George Harrison was shaking his fist at the government on "Taxman". You want dope songs? There's "Dr Robert". You want a singalong number for the kids? There's "Yellow Submarine". You want good uncomplicated pop? There's "Good...

Advantages: Record holds well together, some stand out gems, beautiful, languourously, melancholy but not depressing Disadvantages: if you are into Slipknot this is not for you
...Beth Orton seems to have that air of otherworldliness that could yet mark her out as a legend. In her first two albums she appears to have combined folk and electronica, using Andy Weatherall as a producer on some of her tracks and folk musicians such as DrJohn.
Well what can you say about a track such as " Do no harm" which feels like a languourous reel through the English countryside in summer; in my case it reminds me of the train journey between Brighton and Hastings; or the lyrics, an example from the first track " Your eyes were like cinammon". She explained this that she thought as someone being tasty like sweeties. The pieces are beautifully constructed with DrJohn's piano adding that needed strand of delicacy. Beth being from Norfolk seems to have a country feel about her music, yet something like Central Reservation has...
