Advantages: A Great Album Nice Acoustics Disadvantages: More Sobre Than Stand Up
This is JethroTull's third album. Benefit heralded JethroTulls second appearance on Top Of The Pops with “The Witches Promise”. This album saw the introduction of keyboards and the Tull sound maturing. Heavy riff pieces like “Son” and “To Cry You A Song” were included alongside acoustic masterpieces like “Sossity: Your A Woman”. This album is more humourless than Stand Up but like many of Tull's albums it has stood the test of time. It can be heard that Ian Andersons confidence was building and it shows on his vocals and flute playing throughout the album. ...
Advantages: Great Album Disadvantages: Slightly Depressing In Parts
“Orion” and “Dark Ages” were lumbering epics enlightened by one of Ian Andersons finest whimsies “Dun Ringill”, and the jolly instrumental “Warm Sporran”. Many of the lyrics contained within reflected Andersons views of current affairs. This gives the album a foreboding almost threatening feel although it is not a totally cold record. At this point Tull were trying to find where they would be heading in the future. An unforeseen event after the release of this album (the death of John Glasscock who was ill) meant that the band had many decisions to make. ...
Advantages: Fantastic Return To Blues Disadvantages: None
This 1991 album marks a return to JethroTulls blues roots. It is a much simpler album in terms of arrangements and was written using a guitar and mandolin without a keyboard in sight. The ideas here were to use instruments which came from nature itself. Mixed amongst the songs were lengthy epics like “White Innocence” the light hearted “Like a Tall Thin Girl” and the strange “Thinking Round Corners” the vocals of which indicated that Anderson had gone temporarily mad for three minutes. This is a welcome return to the bands roots. ...

Album Reviews
Q (7/01, p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Jethro Tull fare much better when holding to the pastoral blueprint of earlier tracks 'The Witch's Promise' and 'Songs From The Wood'. Intermittent joy for Morris Dancers and Tudor battle re-enactment enthusiasts everywhere..."
