This compilation was released in 2005 by Virgin Records. It is a 3 disc set and has many good songs. Because it is 3 discs I am not going to review each song individually, as it would make a long review and you will probably fall asleep before the end. So I am going to do a disc by disc review. Here we go then : # Disc 1# Track listing. 1. Queen - We are the champions. 2. Foreigner - I want to know what love is 3. Phil Collins - In the air tonight 4. Whitesnake - Is this love 5. The Scorpions - Wind of change 6. Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes - Up where we belong 7. Mr. Mister - Broken Wings 8. Tina Turner - We don't need another hero 9. Cher - If I could turn back time 10. Cutting Crew - ( I just) died in your arms 11. Reo Speedwagon - Can't fight this feeling 12. Meatloaf - I lie for you (and that's the truth) 13. Heart - Alone 14. Alice Cooper - poison 15. Marrillion - Kayleigh 16. Starship - Nothings gonna stop us now 17. Maria McKee - Show me heaven
This is an interesting mix of songs and I have some particular favourites amongst them. Take for instance Queen - We are the champions, I am sure most people have heard this at some time. I love it. Phil Collins in the air tonight is for me a great song from his Genesis days. Tina Turner - We don't need another hero, from the film Thunderdome is a classic. Cher - If I could turn back time, how many times I have wished just for that. A classic for me. Alice Cooper - poison, this song reminds me of many happy times in my local pub. Deserving to be on this album. There are more but it will take forever so safe to say I like disc 1 very much, there are one or two weak links but then that happens. So on to ...... #Disc 2 # Tracklist. 1. Robbie Williams - Angels 2. The Cars - Drive 3. The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin 4. Air Supply - All out of love 5. Chicago - Hard to say I'm sorry 6. Roxette - Listen to your heart 7. Boston - More than a feeling 8. R.E.M. - the one I love 9. Nickleback - How you remind me 10. The Rolling Stones - Streets of love 11. The Animals - House of the rising sun 12. Nilsson - Without you 13. Sinead O'Connor - nothing compares 2 U 14. Frankie goes to Hollywood - The power of love 15. Poison - Every rose has its thorn 16. Nazareth - Love hurts 17. Pandora's Box - It' all coming back to me now. For me this is the better of the first two albums, I particularly like Robbie Williams - Angels this for me is an absolute classic song. The Moody Blues - Nights in white satin, and The animals - House of the rising sun are both classic songs. Another favourite of mine is Poison - Every rose has its thorn. All in all a fabulous mix and some great tunes. So on to ..........
# Disc 3 # Tracklist. 1. Bonnie Tyler - Holding out for a hero 2. Europe - The final countdown 3. Whitesnake - Here I go again 4. Billy Idol - White wedding 5. Huey Lewis and The News- The power of love 6. Belinda Carlisle - Leave a light on 7. Paul Carrack - Don't shed a tear 8. Alaannah Miles - Black velvet 9. 4 Non Blondes - What's up 10. Chad Kroeger feat Josey Scott - Hero 11. T'Pau - China in your hands 12. Simple Minds - Alive and kicking 13. Stevie Nicks - Rooms on fire 14. John Waite - Missing you 15. Mike and The Mechanics - Over my shoulder 16. Meatloaf - Bat out of hell This is definitely the weakest of the 3 discs, not many I really like on here, there is however Bonnie Tyler - Holding out for a hero, this is a classic and deserves to be on this compilation. The only other one I really like is Meatloaf - Bat out of hell, which I am certain everyone has heard at some time, for me this is a classic also.
Final Conclusion. For me this is a very good mix, however I would personally say they are more soft rock than power ballads. I have my favourites and some I would not buy if not on a compilation. Having said that when I bought this it was to have something that would keep me awake when on long journeys in the car, and it certainly does that. I paid £15.99 for this in 2005, I think this was a good price then, but now it is available for as little as £7 on many sites, I think this is good value for money as it has a playing time of over 3 hours. Overall I still like this album and would buy it again. Would I recommend it? Definitely it has some really classic songs, but as I said some weak links, but that happens with most compilations.
Thank you for reading Tigerthecat. 2009.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Fortunately, I know a lot about power ballads so I know from the track listing that I'd like this album. For someone without that experience, this doesn't really say enough to help make a buying decision.
