fromDirty Mind, not a trace of the earlyControversy, no "Erotic City", no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single-versions and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-printGold Experience. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however,The Very Best of Pri nceis (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalised rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed ("Little Red Corvette") to the cryptically spiritual ("Purple Rain"). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of "Thieves in the Temple" became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. A fine party artefact, this disc is still likely to prove too scanty even for many casual Prince fans.--Rickey Wright

Considerably more streamlined than previous compilations THE HITS 1 and THE HITS 2, the 17 songs that make up THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE offer a nice tour through the Purple One's chart successes for Warner Brothers from 1978 to 1993. Mixed in among chart toppers like the quirky "When Doves Cry," Hendrix-fueled mania of "Let's Go Crazy" and stripped-down funk of "Kiss" are enough brilliant moments to make you wish the guy had focused more on music and less on the identity shifts that characterized most of the '90s. Starting with the 1979 #1 "I Wanna Be Your Lover," Prince's pop sensibilities and inquisitive nature have found him cleverly bouncing back and forth between the twin poles of sex and spirituality. Whether it's the runaway pledge of faith found in "I Would Die 4 U," sly lasciviousness of "Gett Off" or battle-of-the-sexes throw-down with Sheena Easton on "U Got The Look," this Minneapolis native's way with a hook makes more of an impression in retrospect than his ability to shock. Other highlights include the millennial jam "1999," chilling view of the world "Sign O' The Times," gorgeous "Diamonds And Pearls" and irresistible "Alphabet Street."
Album Reviews: Q (9/01, p.133) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...He really was the exciting new face of popular music....The hits that transformed Prince into a superstar to rival Michael Jackson remain some of the most thrilling in pop history..."

...that Paige is a very focussed young woman the sort who puts off people by being focussed to the exclusion of anything else.
Eddie (Prince Edvard of Denmark) is a playboy prince he has no focus and does nothing except have fun to the chargin of his parents and delight of the paparazzi. Until he decides he needs to get away and discover himself, in of all the places Winsconsin.
So he enrolls at the college that Paige attends and running in to her early earns her dislike. She is dismayed when he becomes her lab partner in her main Chemistry class.
But after she gives him a piece of her mind about his 'spoilt little rich kid' ways he decides to change (anyone else find his skinny body a total turn off?), starting with a job at the bar in which she also works. This is his way to win her over.
Predictably he achieves this as she...

Advantages: Very well acted, absorbing, intense, shocking in parts Disadvantages: A little mawkish at the end
...scenarios between psychiatrist and client, suddenly did an all-change into something wet, soppy and mawkish. Each time I have since viewed The Prince Of Tides (and that's rather a lot of times as it's one of my favourite films), I make a point of stopping it when I know it's all going to fall apart and get not stupid exactly...but maybe a tad embarrassingly over-acted.
Another little thing in the main body of the film that I feel maybe needs drawing attention to, is that here and there, Lowenstein displays very fuzzed up boundaries with Tom - boundaries which should be clear and firmly in place at all times when dealing with patients/clients. I'm not sure if this was done deliberately or if that's how psychiatrists and therapists practice in the USA, but I feel overall it could give a poor impression to anybody who may seriously be...
