Drifters' Golden Era (1959-64)--after the frequently dazzling early records with Clyde McPhatter, but featuring the consummate vocal stylings of Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, and more on 16 memorable hits. Among the pinnacles: "There Goes My Baby", the record whose unsettling, soaring strings launched the soul era; the romantic perfection of "Save the Last Dance for Me", "This Magic Moment" and the catchy, Latin-bouncing "Sweets for My Sweet"; and the eternally evocative cityscapes of "Up on the Roof", "Under the Boardwalk" and the stark, gritty "On Broadway". Sleepers include the heartrending Bacharach ballad "Please Stay", "I Count the Tears" (ripped off later on the Grass Roots hit "Let's Live for Today") and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling", on which strings foreshadow the folk-rock movement. This is an ideal starter kit on these seminal uptown soul pioneers; those seeking further revelations (and there are plenty of them) are referred to Rockin' & Driftin': The Drifters Box. --Ken Barnes

Advantages: A compilation of great songs from a great musician Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!
..., as well as "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Drifter's Escape", but this one is easily most remembered by many, specifically due to it's commersial success.
After this, "Stone Free" follows - a very upbeat track with yet another solo - well, I think they go without saying now, so I'll try and limit the mentioning of them!! "Crosstown Traffic" follows this track and personally I feel it upstages the previous track. The first may have been upbeat, but the rythym and tempo of CT is one of Hendrix's best, simple as.
Other classics delivered on this disc include "If 6 was 9" - very much a jamming session kind of track - very little structure, sure pure adrenaline. "Foxy Lady" - This jazzy song is, according to the booklet, "About the only happy song I have written" - obviously not my words, Jimi's words to be precise! Listening to this, you'd have...

...there attracting the attention of the younger buyers, which won't go in The Shadows' favour. Albums from Franz Ferdinand, Avril Lavigne, Keane, and Morrisey are putting up stiff competition, and The Shadows have dropped from 15th to 17th place (week commencing 30th May 2004).
Cover / Inlay Design and Content:-
The cover is 'The Shadows - Life Story' in large uppercase letters. Both the writing and background are the same shade of blue, with the letters being outlined in black. Cleverly, they have used a picture of a guitar as the letter 'I' in 'Life', and as this is a bright red Fender Stratocaster on a pale blue background it really caught my eye, making it very easy to spot in a shop, and very easy on the eye to read.
Overview:-
Although these rockers have been around for over 40 years, I believe that they are one of the best bands...
