, the rest of the songs are still classics in most peoples opinions. Whilst they are not original anymore, and most fans will have 44 of the 45 songs already, I still believe that the songs are original in the sense that no-one can create songs in such a magical way, leaving all other competing bands trailing far behind. With 'Apache' probably being the most famous song by The Shadows, the likes of 'Albatross' and the theme from 'The Deer Hunter' (Cavatina) come very close in the popularity stakes, making it almost impossible to choose your personal favourites. Lyrics:- The Shadows do not have lyrics to most of their songs, but the effect of the music was still as amazing as it would have been with lyrics. Some of the music by The Shadows caused me to feel mixed emotions, such as 'Albatross' which has quite a sad feel to it, but inspires ...

Magic Killers (The Way of Shadows - Brent Weeks)

Advantages: great action scenes, reasonable characters
Disadvantages: pulpy

Somebody once said that there are only two plot lines in classic fantasy: an unexpected simpleton (child, beggar, heathen, girl, commoner) saving the world (e.g. Frodo) and a king threatened by the usurper (e.g. Arthur). This is, of course, a major simplification, but still, many, many fantasy novels follow one of those plotlines. The Way of Shadows seems to be an example of the first one. Azoth is a guild rat, grown up in the slums, poverty and fear, beatings and abuse his daily reality. When, in a sudden flash of justified anger he crosses the Fist of his guild, he has to make some hard decisions, quickly. His life is at stake, and the only way out he sees is apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint: the best assassin in the city. Azoth changes his identity to Kylar Stern and has to leave his old life in the slums of the Warrens to face ...

Review of The Way of Shadows - Brent Weeks

Burnt Shadows - Very impressive.

Advantages: Nice writing style, wide knowledge of the cultures involved, engaging characters
Disadvantages: Not particularly happy, not a holiday read, you need to pay attention to this book.

choice lines in there, especially near the end when Ilse has moved to New York as an old woman. The thing that amazed me so much about this book was the scope of the thing. It's not hugely long book, but it covers 50 years of life between two families in detail without once feeling rushed or like it's missing anything. It's also impressive how the writer managed to understand the nationalities of so many groups of people, and how it would effect their behavior in life. I really enjoyed this book, not only is the plot engaging but the writing style is very accessable and makes it a very interesting read. ...
