I was lucky enough earlier this year to see The Birthday Massacre live at the Camden Underworld. I don't remember much of it (I didn't have that nice a time due to several problems, including my friend forgetting the tickets so we had to wait an hour for her brother to bring them.). As an apology, my friend bought me the album, and I haven't looked back since. I'm hooked.
The Birthday Massacre offer something I've found hard to find ... ...merge of vocals and electronic music. The passages Chibi whispers and rasps remind me of poetry, and Grand Corps Malade (a french poet/rapper), but with a definate synth goth edge to it. She is constantly merging from a sweet sugary synth pop voice to a demonic rasp and then again to a touching whisper, in a way that makes this album original and a joy to listen to.

The Birthday Massacre offer something I've found hard to find recently- orginal deep songs, with beautiful lyrics and a wonderful merge of vocals and electronic music.
I have to admit that the lyrics, though original, are highly infectious, and I keep getting strange looks for singing about shooting pretty boys and being a murder tramp. Just a warning. I love this album to pieces, and it shows!!
My favourite song is probably Happy Birthday, because I love the lyrics, the way she wears her black and white dress to a party and at the end it's black and red, and pretty much everything inbetween. Video Kid makes me smile everytime, oh, and induces the urge to pretend my dancemat isn't broken anymore... :( Blue is also good, although the change from sweet Chibi to "evil" Chibi quite alarmed me the first time. Lover's End really puts across the feeling that we are the scared little girl in the cellar with the forgotten lover. All the songs are examples of how goth can be unique and interesting, and show the importance of audiable lyrics.
I honestly loved everything on this album, and often had bizarre urges to put on neon green dreadfalls, too much makeup and huge boots and clomp around my bedroom. But what they hey, I guess I'm just an impressionable young woman.
