a brace of teenage sisters whose beauty mesmerises the local boys and whose suicides devastate the community. It's a Gothic, faintly silly romantic fantasy about lust for the unattainable, and Air's enigmatic "pure pop" treatment is the perfect musical backdrop. Tracks like "Playground Love" and "Highschool Lover" are deceptively candy-coated pieces of puppy lover's pop, all sighing saxophones and dippy keyboards, while "Bathroom Girl" is a slo-mo vision of beauty. With the spookier synth pulses and black vibes of "Cemetery Party" and "Dark Messages", however, Air get to signal the weirder undercurrents of the movie, while "Dead Bodies" is a full-on Gothic wig-out complete with a sisterly choir from beyond the grave.--David Stubbs

The new album from Air is hard to define. A full album of newly recorded tracks (Unlike their last release Premier Symptomes, which was their first mini-album beefed up with rare tracks.) this album is still NOT the follow up to 1998's Moon Safari. It is in fact the official sound track to Sofia Coppola's film The Virgin Suicides. It is important as we judge it to remember that without the context of the film to define the meaning of the tracks. The most outstanding tracks are:
PLAYGROUND LOVE
Five words. Dark Side of The Moon. Not really, but not far off. This low, piano based song sounds like it could of easily been a track from side two of Dark Side. A saxophone enters at different points, helping enforce the sadness of the words. 9/10
BATHROOM GIRL
Another one of the themes, this track instantly hints at a sadness that we all feel. A better word would be human. This is a very human song. The low guitar is nice and understated. 8/10
CEMETARY PARTY
Slow and deliberate, this song reminds me of something but I just can't put my finger on it. The track is going somewhere, but will no be rushed. We once again hear the 'Bathroom Girl' theme. Mmmm. nice 8/10
THE WORD "HURRICANE"
Floydian opening, with funky bass, a Atom Heart Mother type vocal and Masonesque drums. This carries on for a few minutes until the music stops and we get a lone female voice talking about how a Hurricane is formed. As this is going on, we hear low moans, heavy breathing. Fabulous premise of sex. This suddenly turns into an enormous blast of heavy guitar and bass, fading into nothing. Really rather beautiful 10/10
AFTERNOON SISTER
Trade mark Air sounding keyboards support this acoustic guitar track, repturning to one of the earleir themes. A string quartet gives depth where it wasn't expected. Slow, but not plodding. It's simply taking it's time. 8/10
EMPTY HOUSE
Late seventies Electro in a Kraftwerk style. Basic low keyboard is playing a basic tune, but it is very very effective. The string section returns again, and we suddenly see just how layered the Air sound is. 9/10
DEAD BODIES
Air's version of a Rock 'N' Roll song. Played on Parisian piano, it makes cliched chords sound enlivened. Then we hear a choir, and the r'n'r starts again. Sounding like the perfect offspring between Pink Floyd's paterly Dogs, and the motherly influence of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter 9/10
SUICIDE UNDERGROUND
Speach by a low, slowed voice (Sounding very much like Godspeed You Black Emperah!) This song represents the feelings of love lost/thrown away, and how undefianble it is. A female voice tells: 'Obviously Doctor, You've never been a thirteen year old girl' We hear the story of a group of sisters who have commited suicide. Very, very ethemeral 10/10
The strongest crtitcism to this album I can offer is that the tracks are oddly placed. But as this is a movie soundtrack, and the songs occur as they would in the film, this argument is redundant. This new Air album (follow-up or not) takes them beyond Moon Safari and into a rare commodity - Originality. Sure, we are often reminded of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Kraftwerk and many of Yoko Ono's excellent sound collages, but these are not taken or borrowed -they are added to. Air will be with us for a long time, and if this is anything to go by, Air are the future.

Advantages: Captures emotions brilliantly and is easy to listen to. Disadvantages: May be a little repetitive for some, as the same tune is adapted throughout.
...the same name. The Virgin Suicides, directed by the brilliant Sofia Coppola, is a dark film about isolation and youth. Many great actors/actresses contributed to the film, including Kathleen Turner as the strict and bible bashing mother and Kirsten Dunst as the precarious teenage daughter. The score is entirely composed by the brilliance of the French musical duo; Air. The pieces are mostly instrumental, and run along with the film excellently, with ... ...is extremely emotive, and the use of eery synths contribute to the chilling outcome of the film. Even the heavier parts of the album are delicate and easy to listen to
Any fans of Air, and their creativly brilliant previous albums will love this score. I found myself chilling out with this album playing in the background, as i feel it successfully captures the listeners imagination. I felt like i was in a trance listening to it!
Brilliant....enjoy! ...

Advantages: Smooth flowing music, easy to listen to, AIR Disadvantages: over used themes, fairly short
...with an autuer director. The Virgin Suicides fits the bill, and who else but Air to provide the sounds for this charming story set in the 70's.
The music on offer here is delightfully retro and very warm sounding, it has instant appeal and is bound to put a wide smile on your face.
Yes, it is only short, and it repeats a few musical themes, but it is a soundtrack after all, and the repeated themes help to give the CD an identity of its own.

Walking On Air Review ofVirgin Suicides, The (Original Soundtrack) - Airby

Advantages: A Classic, atmospheric film score Disadvantages: It's not going to appeal to a wide range of people
This is a review of the beautiful score produced, composed and performed by Air. I've yet to see the film but the reviews I've seen state that it is haunting and elegiac. In that case I cannot imagine a better soundtrack. I would find it difficult to categorise the music. It has influences of classical/jazz/ambient pop. As unappealing as that may sound you have to listen to it to appreciate how well it gels together. "Playground Love" is the perfect ... ...it or by "Highschool Lover". Ironically the most upbeat and ethereal track is "Dead Bodies" (!).
I have never recommended a musical score before but this soundtrack is something special I promise you!
On the downside it's only around 40 minutes and if you don't like Air you won't like this. ...

Advantages: A departure from their earlier work, still unmistakeably Air though Disadvantages: Helps to have seen the film
...first saw the film 'The Virgin Suicides', they loved it - apart from the soundtrack. So they set out to create one of their own - and this is the result. Their work is now used throughout the film, although occasionally in different places from where the band originally intended! It probably helps to have seen the film - especially to understand the final track, whose lyrics are the abstracted resume that comes at the end of the film - but this album ...

Air we go again Review ofVirgin Suicides, The (Original Soundtrack) - Airby

Advantages: An Air fix until the new album comes out Disadvantages: Feel album would mean alot more if I'd seen the film
...of them. The Virgin Suicides is the soundtrack to the Sophia Coppola (I have almost forgiven her for ruining The Godfather Part 3 for me with her acting as Al Pacino’s daughter) directed film of the same name.
This album is in the same style as the previous two with their multi-layered harmonies and electronic twists, however, it also has a distinct reflective, movie soundtrack feel to it. There is a much darker feel to this album, which from ... ...with the theme of the film. Personally I feel that the best two tracks on the album are the ironic “Playground love” (probably my favourite Air tune, I wish I had the single which has a “vibraphone version” on it!) and the synth mashing darkness of "Cemetery Party".
Overall this is a good album. It is definitely a more cohesive piece of work than most soundtrack albums, which tend to be little more than a half-baked mix of ...

Album Notes: Air: Nicholas Godin, Jean-Benoit Dunckel (various instruments). Additional instruments: Gordon Tracks (vocals, drums); Hugo Ferran (saxophone); Brian Reitzell (drums). French duo Air's soundtrack for the Sofia Coppola-directed (yes, THAT Coppola) film THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is a far cry from the bouncy post-disco sounds of their earlier efforts. Instead of light, cheery, and fun music full of ironic wit, this album delves into darker regions. Dance beats are clearly not the agenda here, as the largely instrumental album paints moody sonic portraits that bring to mind the highly textured '70s work of art-rockers like Eno and Pink Floyd. In fact, much of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES sounds more like a batch of vintage prog-rock outtakes than like the work of Europe's most cutting-edge electronic popsters. Breaking the vocal silence (but not the dark mood) are "Playground Love," sung by Gordon Tracks, and the album's closer, an extended, unsettling monologue delivered by a deep, nightmare-inducing voice.
