Air’s (Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel) previous album Moon Safari and the “mini-LP” Premiers Symptomes (a compilation of early work) were both superb, they managed to prove that is more to French music than Daft Punk. Now, however, Air are famous and prior to the release of this album had not released any new material for two years, so lot was expected of them.
The Virgin Suicides is the soundtrack to the Sophia Coppola (I have almost forgiven her for ruining The Godfather Part 3 for me with her acting as Al Pacino’s daughter) directed film of the same name.
This album is in the same style as the previous two with their multi-layered harmonies and electronic twists, however, it also has a distinct reflective, movie soundtrack feel to it. There is a much darker feel to this album, which from what I have read in ImogenW’s review seems in keeping with the theme of the film.
Personally I feel that the best two tracks on the album are the ironic “Playground love” (probably my favourite Air tune, I wish I had the single which has a “vibraphone version” on it!) and the synth mashing darkness of "Cemetery Party".
Overall this is a good album. It is definitely a more cohesive piece of work than most soundtrack albums, which tend to be little more than a half-baked mix of various ideas. I still feel however, that this is really just an appetiser, another “mini-LP” (It is only about 45 mins long after all!) as Air might say, for their new album that is out in just over a month’s time.

Advantages: Captures emotions brilliantly and is easy to listen to. Disadvantages: May be a little repetitive for some, as the same tune is adapted throughout.
