Advantages: Unparalleled playing, Unbelievably good bargain for 6 CDs!
Disadvantages: Um, paper sleeves? No, seriously, it's great

...This box set comprises recordings from 1985-89, when Horowitz was 81 years old! In 1986 Horowitz returned to Russia after 60 years away to give his monumental Moscow recital of which the live recording is included in this set. I personally find this performance of Liszt's Sonetto 104 del Petrarca to be the finest ever recorded. Alongside this is Scarlatti, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Schumann, Chopin, Moszkowski, and Schubert. Accompanying this recital is 5 other discs of outstandingly unique playing. As he got older, Horowitz's playing became a sort of caricature of itself in the nicest possible way. By this I mean, his dynamics became more extreme, he became more expressive than ever, and his sense of style was heightened to new levels. Discovering Our Greatest Living Pianist
Review of Bach: Keyboard Works by  zerbine28

Advantages: Brilliant, stirring, excitingly unpredictable, fresh performance; "genius" is not hyperbole in Argerich's case.
Disadvantages: Reflecting its LP origins, the CD lasts only 50' 16"!

...in the same way I regard Jacqueline du Pré and the cello—both such musically charismatic and unpredictable performers who have inspired devoted, even fanatical followings whose praise and cult-like adoration resemble those showered upon the likes of Vladimir Horowitz. The word “can’t” seems to be missing from their performing vocabularies. Like du Pré, Argerich seems to play instinctively, with an intensity and passion that electrifies listeners. Argerich is that rare performer who does very well with a varied repertoire, including works by Romantics Chopin and Schumann, Ravel, modern composers like Bartok and Prokofiev, and, as in this recording, J. S. Bach. My only lament is that she has recorded too few of Bach’s works. Not much else to say except to strongly recommend the disc to one and all. It deserves a place in every Bach lover... Turbocharged and Elegant All At Once
Review of Argerich - Live from the Concertgebouw II by  zerbine28

Advantages: Argerich's clarity of melodic line, striking colors and moods; thrilling, chilling, enchanting, arresting performances.
Disadvantages: Her Fantasiestucke may strike some as too rushed, less nuanced--or so I'm told.

...and stirring interpretations. Her playing isn't note-perfect (in the Fantasiestücke and Gaspard de la Nuit), but so what? Such highly spirited performances can only be dreamed of by lesser mortals. Besides, it also implies an endearing imperfection in this god-like pianist. (Incidentally, Vladimir Horowitz was accused of the same crime.) That Martha possesses absolute mastery over every work is clear. I often wonder if she has a secret hotline to the spirits of these fellows long dead, as they seem to speak through her. Others may disagree (and vehemently so) with my impressions here. While I'm neither a professional musician nor even a decent amateur one, I just know which performers move me at a profound level. (Just an aside here. On hearing Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin's interpretation of Frederic Chopin's Barcarolle [in F sharp major, opus... Read review
