After the release of The Voice, Classic FM refused to give it airplay. Was it because it was too radical? How can one mix opera and popular music in one CD? And who was Russell Watson, anyway?
Fans protested, Classic FM changed its mind and played what the people wanted to hear, and Russell Watson ended up winning at The Classical Brit Awards that year, and the kudos have not stopped.
The Voice is a mix of arias and popular music covers. The choice of songs gives us a chance to see what The Voice can do - and it does it well. Although I don't like how he sings rock and roll, the versitility of Russell Watson's voice is obvious. There are three duets on the CD - Saylon Dola with Marie Brennan, Someone Like You with Cleopatra Higgins, and Barcelona with Shaun Ryder.
Where Watson really shines is on tracks such as Nessun Dorma, Nella Fantasia, and Amor ti Vieta. His voice, phrasing, and control are all superb. The orchestrations are good and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra does a fine job.
The Voice is a good place to start if you are thinking about adding Russell Watson's music to your collection.
