BACKGROUND ******************** I listen to Slipknot since their debuts. They appeared with the new metal movement, however at the time, they were to be different, because more extreme. They were closer to death metal in their sound... Vol3. The subliminal verses, is their 3rd opus. Their first album was more metal, their second very death metal, even more extreme, and finally this one, well... I would say experimental (to use the words of their drummer, Joey Jordison).
WHO IS SLIPKNOT? ************************ They are 9 crazy musicians from Des Moines, Iowa, USA. They are wearing masks while playing, and their physical identity remained unknown until recently. Some of the members still haven't appear in magazines without their mask. Each member of the group wears a mask of his own, a mask they chose and designed themselves. They update their masks for each album. Usually, they are quite similar (same main features on the mask), but with new bits. Each member has also a number:
0 Sid Wilson (DJ)
1 Joey Jordison (drums)
2 Paul Gray (bass)
3 Chris Fehn (percussions)
4 James Root (guitar)
5 Craig Jones (sampler)
6 Shawn Crahan (percussions)
7 Mick Thomson (guitar)
8 Corey Taylor (lead singer)
WHAT ABOUT THE ALBUM? ********************************* Well. It is very different from their second one, Iowa. The latter one was very extreme, almost death metal. However, on this one, they went back to a less quick type of music, but a lot more complex and guitar oriented. There are also several surprises, like acoustic guitars, quiet songs a la Stone Sour... That's actually where the album shines in my opinion. The guitars are finally allowed to express themselves, maybe because they changed producers; on their 2 first albums, Ross Robinson (one of the trendiest metal producer of the late 90's) was producing their work. At the time, guitar solos were just out of fashion, and just sucked (fools!)... which means that the 2 guitarists couldn’t fully express themselves. On vol3., Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, AC/DC, The Mars Volta...) is behind the sound of the band... And what a difference! The sound is a lot rawer. You don't have the feeling of huge production, which make this album more in your face. TRACKLISTING ********************* 1- Prelude 3.0: Strange opening for Slipknot. On their last 2 previous albums, they opened with weird and disturbing screams and noises. Here they opened with a song, mostly quiet, without screams, but with an increasing distortion in the sound. With this track, you know straight away that this album will be different. This is not the Slipknot people know. Ok track.
2- The Blister Exists: My personal favourite. An opening typically a la Slipknot. The voice is very raw. Very thrashy. I love it. Second surprise of the album: the guitars. During the verses, Mick plays a super fast arpeggio which sounds basically like a solo. Very impressive, and you know straight away that these guys know how to play. They have been criticised a lot in the past years, but here, they put the things right in place. Also noticeable, the really cool break with the drum rolls by Joey, Chris and Shawn. On stage, Chris and Shawn had drums attached around their waist, and were moving kind of like the Duracell rabbits. Very cool. My personal favourite.
3- Three Nil: Another violent song with extra fast drums. Also samples and scratches usual to Slipknot. A typical Slipknot song. Screaming voice. This song is in the style of Iowa. It sounds like death metal at moments.
4- Duality: First single of this album. Slipknot tends to have a format for their single. They mix screams with clear voices. They have their formatted singles. On their first album it was "wait and bleed", on the second "Left behind". So this song doesn't shine with originality. Not a bad song, but nothing memorable.
5- Opium of the people: A funny opening with the guitar. It sounds like a video game. Screamed verses, and melodic chorus. Good track with a solo. Very cool. I love this track.
6- Vermilion: Heavy song, but melodic and threatening at the same time. Interesting track. Slow rhythm.
7- Pulse of the maggots: Threatening start with sirens, screamed speech. Then the music starts and there is an increasing tension. The vocals are a bit rappish here. Great track I love it. There is also a solo “a la” Slayer.
8- Welcome Very cool drumming on this track. Very fast track with a cool solo… Also samples… screaming voice
9- Circle Weird noises opened this slow melodic track. Here the voice of Corey is very melodic. It is a kind of break in the album. Surprising song for Slipknot. For the first time in Slipknot's history, an acoustic guitar can be heard. Very quiet and melodic song. It does remind of Stone Sour, the side project of the singer and one of the guitarists of Slipknot.
10- Before I forget: The violence is back… Really heavy start. The vocals are great, the music has the rhythm of a machine gun. I like this track.
11- The nameless: Another quick song with scratches. I like the rhythm, which reminds me of a more conventional thrash metal. There is also melodic breaks right in the middle of the song with acoustic guitars. A lot of changes into the rhythm. Very complex, complete song.
12- Vermilion part 2: This track has acoustic guitars and melodic vocals. So many “quiet” songs are definitely something really new in Slipknot. That shows that they are not scared of experimenting. Proof of a quality band.
13-The virus of life: Introduction with percussions, performed by Chris and Shawn, and also a bit of weird noises, provided by Craig. The rhythm and the format of this song reminds me a bit of Korn. A very slow track, nonetheless heavy and full of tension.
14- Danger keep away: Keyboards and voices only. Quite melancholic song. Corey says “We too feel alone”. Then starts with the verses. Very sad melody, but very musical lyrics in clear voice. Then the drums and the clean guitars arrive. This track closes the album…

OVERVIEW *************** A definite original album, filled with surprises and quality musicianship. Very energic, sad and violent at the same time. The quiet moments of the album are filled with emotion, but no pleasant emotions: sadness melancholy. A masterpiece if you ask me. Their best work. I saw them performing for this album. And they were great live. That was what I called a real show. If you want more info about the band, you can check my other review: http://www.ciao.co.uk/Slipknot__Review_5365986
FINAL COMMENT ********************* There is a question left pending here. And this question is: Why do the Hulk’s pants never crack around the waist when he transforms???
Advantages: Great stuff pure Slipknot material Disadvantages: May not be sitable for young kids
Slipknot; Volume 3 The Subliminal Verses
I have been a fan of Slipknot for a few years now and after hearing them on the T.V the other day I decided to find the CD's I had bought so I could write some reviews.
The Band
The Band have 9 members from Des Moines, Iowa in America. They come under the Heavy Metal Genre. Each Member has their own Mask which changes every now and then. Shawn 'Clown' Crahan has just recently had one made to feature ... ...much of a feminie side to be honest but anyway...
The Band formed in 1995 and released their Debut album Mate. Feed. Kill in 1996.
The band came up with the nickname Maggots for their fans because when they perform live they believe that the fans are feeding off their music and they jump around alot and according to the nine(Slipknot guys) that makes them look like Maggots

Advantages: A few good tracks, drumming is excellent Disadvantages: A fair few dud tracks, vocals are a little tired at times
...pretentious but then they released Vol.3 The subliminal verses and there are actually a few decent tracks on this album, to name the key tracks. Duality, Opium of the people, Three Nil, and before I forget. To sum it up even finer I would use this as a rough guide -35% of the songs are actually good. -35% are average, and ok, but not anything to listen to -30% are poor and don’t offer anything Not many bands release their best work last, but that’s ... ...lot more depth, structure and sound to this album, it still retains a few of the typical Slipknot moments, but for the most part it shows an improved band. Buy this album if you didn’t like Slipknot before and want to see how much they’ve changed into a competent band, however if you are missing brain cells and liked Slipknot before then you will be buying this album anyway, but maybe then you wont like it because it is actually a lot different! ...

Advantages: Not generic sounding, amazing guitar and drumming, experimental Disadvantages: Not like previous 2 albums, some dud tracks
Slipknot are a 9 piece heavy metal band from des moines, iowa. They have created some of the heaviest albums ever created and their first album is called "the heaviest album to ever go into the top 3 on the billboard charts in the US". Quite an achievement in a way for a heavy metal band. There previous 2 albums have been stupidly heavy in places backed by the insanely fast drumming and over the top growls as vocals. I am a big fan of the previous ... ...experimental and different from the previous 2 albums I didn't know what to think. The band went on a hiatus after the 2nd album so that they could pursue various side projects including Stone Sour and Murderdolls. After returning to create the new album there was lots of tension and it took a while for the ball to start rolling on the writing process. This led to plenty of rumours that the band would split up or that the album would not be started ...

not as heavy as previous albums but renditions of vermillion and vermillion part 2 show they have a more gentle acoustic side to them. does two different renditions of the same song show lack of material? you decide
Advantages: Melodies to go with the anger Disadvantages: The lyrics occasionally die out

Opening on a barrage on tumbling ... ...far Slipknot have come since their first album.
Side-stepping the whole nu-metal path of predictable down tuned sledge hammering riffs and playground chants, this sees the band moving in directions you wouldn't have thought them capable of a few years back. THE BLISTER EXISTS, on the other hand has its sound firmly rooted in the past, lacking the subtlety of the opening track and replacing it with pile driving speed metal guitar riffs and the kind ...

Album Notes: Initial pressings of VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) include Enhanced CD content. Recording information: The Mansion At Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, California; Akadamie Mathematique, Los Angeles, California; Sound City, Los Angeles, California. Far removed from their rap-metal roots, these masked men of extreme metal show no signs of relenting with VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). For this brutal chapter of the Slipknot story, the jagged sound of fierce heaviness and moody melodicism is executed deftly, as Slipknot ducks crossover cliches and nu-metal formula. Esteemed studio guru Rick Rubin captures the group's raw intensity with sonic reverence, a feat not easily achieved with bands of this style. VOL. 3 delivers all the elements that Slipknot fans have come to expect and demand. From solid, catchy choruses ("Duality") to fearsome blasts of noise and percussive gymnastics ("Three Nil," "Welcome"), and borderline balladry ("Vermilion Pt. 2"), unsettling emotions and images are vividly depicted for the listener by this notorious Iowan ensemble.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 - "VOL.3 experiments with even new extremes, which in Slipknot's case means tunefulness and traditional song structures."
Entertainment Weekly (p.80) - "Slipknot hook up with superproducer Rick Rubin and cement their rep as the scariest and smartest band of the Ozzfest generation." - Grade: A-
Q (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] triumph....It's on the mighty single 'Duality' and spookily atmospheric 'Prelude 3.0' that Slipknot really blow the competition away."
CMJ (p.24) - "[P]robably the band's best....Slipknot make serious metal on VOL.3..."
