When I first heard there was to be a follow-up third album to Slipknots terrible mess of an album ‘IOWA’, I thought ‘Oh no not another review where I end up writing ‘pretentious’ ‘rubbish’ and ‘an insult to metal’ over and over again. But in my tradition or testing everything no matter what I assume it to be like I had to see if this album completed the trilogy of errors or whether the Nine-piece band could produce at least something worth listening too somehow.
I’m ashamed to say it really, but ‘The subliminal Verses’ is NOT a complete mess, it’s by no means a very good or even good album, but it has a little something in it that makes it a cut above the previous and here’s what it is.
PRELUDE 3.0:
This is basically the albums Intro and doesn’t offer much in the way of music, just some driving guitars and spooky piano/drum pieces. It’s actually very soft and sounds like something Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park might write. I can’t really say much more about it since it’s not a proper song; it sets the album ok Okay though.
THE BLISTER EXISTS: Okay now this is a bit more like what slipknot used to do except for one thing. While it has a lot of their screaming and messy guitars it actually has a structure to it, it doesn’t feel like a complete mess, although when the vocals come in it starts to grow tiring quickly, it’s quite a long song and can grow tedious half way through. The chorus is ok, it’s more melodic than slipknots usually do and it sounds better because of that. However at the end there is a 1 minute long drum solo which shows some really good drumming, which is the best thing about this song as the rest isn’t up to much.
THREE NIL: This song starts off strong with some good drumming and guitar riffs, but soon breaks
into some tired and horrible vocals, but musically this album is far far better so far. The bridge of this song introduces more good riffs and drum beats. In fact the drumming is almost as good as system of a down, but the rest isn’t. The song ends pretty much as it started except with vocals, it’s a decent song with a lot of good riffs and drumming.
DAULITY: This is the bands first single, and is probably the best song on the album. With a opening Corey whispers ‘I push my fingers into my eyes’ it soon breaks into a much louder driving chorus with some decent drumming and guitar work. The verses are more of a rapping, quiet nature, and they aren’t the strongest part of this song, the strong point of it is its chorus which makes it the best song on the album, its got a few elements of Stone Sour in it.
OPIUM OF THE PEOPLE: This song starts of very promising, with some system of a down style guitar riffs and a energetic follow up riff, but then the vocals kick in and spoil the song. Having said that its still a decent track that shows some promise. The vocals don’t spoil it too much and the chorus is melodic and fits in well. It ends with another good riff that’s sure to gather fans.
CIRCLE: Ok now things get weird, no your ears do not deceive you this is an acoustic song and yes it sounds like something Limp Bizkit or Staind would do! It’s not bad, but it doesn’t really fit very well in the grand scheme of things. The guitars are basic and the vocals get a little mundane after a while, unfortunately there’s a few of these on the album.
WELCOME: This song is a bit more like Iowa and the styles Slipknot liked to do during that period, and because of this, its rubbish. The drumming and guitars are very disjointed and uninspired, as are the vocals with Corey yelling ‘Discarded, Retarded’ and various other boring clichés. Not much to say about this song, not very good at all.
VERMILLION: This song starts off with a little spooky effect before opening into some jumpy, erratic but soft guitars and drums. It’s a fairly soft song for Slipknot but works a lot better than Circle, the vocals aren’t so tired or boring and the overall music is better. The bridge of this song is also pretty good, but not anything really special, in fact when Slipknot put their little guitar solos into the songs you feel its just to try and make people think they aren’t generic nu-metal, but it doesn’t really fool anyone, the finish to this song is good though.
PULSE OF THE MAGGOTS: This happens to be one of my least favourite songs on the album, even though it isn’t particularly disjointed or awful, it’s mainly because of what the songs about. Its self pity and basically a siren to all the ‘mistreated, misunderstood Goths and grungers out there and this sort of subject isn’t one that produces excellent lyrical content. Musically it’s not too bad though with some good drumming and nice guitar hooks as Corey yells, ‘We are the pulse of the maggots’.
BEFORE I FORGET: In a complete reversal, this song happens to be one of my favourites on the album. In begins in Korn-Esque style opening riff before leading onto something a little different. The vocals are average during the verse, but during the Chorus where Corey songs ‘I was a creature before I could stand, I will remember before I forget’, the Chorus has to be the best Slipknot have ever produced, they are much better at doing music a bit more organised and structured. The Bridge is very Limp bizkity, but works well in this case with a down tuned guitar solo before leading onto the chorus again, good song anyway!
VERMILLION PART II: As the title says, its part two to the averagely decent song that was Vermillion-part one if you like. It’s another acoustic song, but unlike Circle its actually not too bad, although it does get a bit repetitive after a few minutes with the words ‘I wont let this build up inside me’ repeated again and again. The sound of the guitars is ok with a mellow sometimes spooky sound to it, so ok they can just about pull acoustics off then.
THE NAMELESS: This is another Iowa-esque song at first, with the disjointed vocals drums and guitars, and again it doesn’t work too well. Suddenly though it breaks into an acoustic piece, for about 15 seconds and then it goes back into the stupidity of the intro. It’s slightly interesting in this format, but not enough to make it a memorable nor is a good song, although the riffage during the bridge of the song is decent. Even the drumming getting tired now though!
THE VIRUS OF LIFE: This is a slow but heavy-ish song that actually works quite well. It’s more of a slow burning grinding song with some decent hooks and riffs coupled with better drumming from Joey. The vocals are ok but not as good as the instruments ‘This is the viruses, the virus of life’ groans Corey, although I’m not sure what exactly he’s talking about. At the end there are some Korn-like groaning vocals to finish it off, not a bad song actually, especially when you give it a few listens.
DANGER! KEEP AWAY: Not a lot to say about this song, it’s half acoustic and half no guitars at all. Obviously an attempt to finish on a soft note, but it doesn’t really work at all, Vermillion part two would have worked much better here, and it’s a poor end to a mixed album!
So all in all this was a surprisingly competent effort from a band I almost completely blackballed. They released 2 major albums both of which I thought were boring, repetitive, uninspired, and pretentious but then they released Vol.3 The subliminal verses and there are actually a few decent tracks on this album, to name the key tracks. Duality, Opium of the people, Three Nil, and before I forget.
To sum it up even finer I would use this as a rough guide
-35% of the songs are actually good. -35% are average, and ok, but not anything to listen to -30% are poor and don’t offer anything
Not many bands release their best work last, but that’s the way Slipknot have decided to do it. There’s a lot more depth, structure and sound to this album, it still retains a few of the typical Slipknot moments, but for the most part it shows an improved band.
Buy this album if you didn’t like Slipknot before and want to see how much they’ve changed into a competent band, however if you are missing brain cells and liked Slipknot before then you will be buying this album anyway, but maybe then you wont like it because it is actually a lot different!
And I only used the world pretentious once!

I actually think this is their best album, mainly because it's got a diversity that neither of their previous albums have. Alex

Their best last? Do you know for sure this is their last album? Really? I can't see it being the last one personally. I thought this album was pretty good, though not as good as the self titled. I wouldn't have drawn any comparison between Slipknot and System though. I mean sure, their first release was overly influenced by Mr Bungle, which are a band System also like to wrip off, but that's where the similarities end.

Very nice work. However, I do not agree with you. I find this album fabulous. Their best. I reviewed it too...
