Advantages: raw, intense and instinctive. An honest view of their world. Disadvantages: None
Pearl Jam came together in 1991 and quickly made their mark as one of the great 90s grunge bands. I was 14 at the time and the fresh new sound and emotive political lyrics struck a chord with that has lasted a life time. Before their debut album 'Ten' Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass) had worked together in previous bands, most acclaimed Green River. They then hooked up through friends with Mike McCready (lead guitar), Eddie Vedder ... ...the grunge scene with political and angst ridden lyrics, simple rhythm chords, heavy guitar riffs and gravelly vocals and combined it technical skill surpassing many of their peers and a 70s stadium rock feel that give them their longivity.
Released in 1993 'Vs' was their second album and it took the band in a new direction. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, the album was recorded with the band playing as a whole, rather than recording each instrument ...

Advantages: Rockin Pearl Jam tracks galore Disadvantages: none
Pearl Jam’s second offering, Vs was the first time I heard the band and I can say I’ve never looked back since. I’m gonna attempt to blitz all their albums for ciao – but it’s going to be some task to get over how much I love this band.
Vs kicks in with ‘Go’ full of pulsating riffs and pounding drums and bass. I can’t help think of Kurt Cobain when listening to this track. In April 1994 at a Pearl ... ...song to Kurt with the pleading lyrics, “please don’t go on me” – a few days later Kurt was gone.
Eddie’s grating vocals on ‘Animal’ have to be sung along with even if the result is a very gruff throat. This has to be a favourite on the album – another rocker with intricate Pearl Jam style guitaring and is full of Eddie shouting, “I’d rather be with an animal”!?!?!
The pace slows ...

Advantages: Seattle rock at it's very finest Disadvantages: Not enough exposure in the UK
Pearl Jam appeared in the early nineties from the remnants of Mother Love Bone and Green River.
They were quickly lumped into the "grunge" category and left to fend against such acts as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains.
Their first album Ten was highly acclaimed and is still one of the biggest selling albums in the world today.
This was there supposedly "difficult" second album, as they attempted to revive the hype of their first album.
... ...this albums stumbles into life. It is a rant about somebody who is suicidal, with Eddie shouting out "Don't go on me!!!". Although this was way before Kurt decided to let go, it was often linked after the event. Brilliant track with plenty of anger and guitars.Yes!!
----Animal----
A song about people that steal from other people in the streets. "I'd rather be with an animal" is the rousing call from Eddie as he vocalises his dislike of these thugs. ...

Pearl Jam's seocond album, VS, is in my opinion their best. Although the band seem to have lost some of their enthusiasm and energy on their records of late, this album took the best songwriting from 'Ten' and added a more agreesive feel resulting in classic songs such as opener 'Go' and 'Leesh'. Although that is not too say the whole album follows that format as their is still an abundance of more diverse material present, such as Indifference. ... ...press, toured constantly and made videos rather than the more media shy cretins they've become of late. Along with Ten is certainly their best collection of tracks to date, and is well recommeded to anyone who's only just got into the band , or who is a fan of their contempories Nirvan and Soundgarden. Eddie Vedder remain one of the best vocalists in rock today ! ...

This album is absolutely amazing! Their follow up to the massive "Ten" I'm sure some people were ready to criticise it but I can't find any fault. The album explodes to life with "Go" and follows with more fast-paced, technical songs such as "Dissident", "Animal", "Rearviewmirror", "Blood" and "Rats" all of which are very rock, very grunge, very heavy guitars, pounding drums with some excellent solos and melodies.
This album, however also brings ... ...songs like "Daughter", "Indifference" and the beautiful "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" with more acoustic, detailed and calm songs, songs that could bring a tear to a grown man's eyes!
It was around this time that Pearl Jam were being grouped with bands such as Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. I, however believe this album put Pearl Jam in a league of their own.
This album was recorded in one take, with the band basically ...

the trend in Pearljams songs , thers a few political messages in there to amuse you too.
Boom Gasper also play a big part in this albums new/different sound, with his masterly playing of his Hammond B3(organ) on nearly every song. Great to see- Is that him a permememt member now? we will have to wait and see. He certanily adds a new dimension to this album, and if you see them live-adds well to old classics too.
As usuall Brendon O'brian has done a spot on job of mixing and producing, no crapy 'for radio production' here, it sounds great through a decent stereo.
The cover is good, with a nice glossy gatefold type box to keep your cherished cd in. And a arty picture. Inside is lyrics- very handy as Eddy is hard to make out often.
So , Great another album

Advantages: Veder, his band, the songs, the lyrics.... Disadvantages: slight production muffles
If one word were to define Eddie Veder, lead vocals of Seattle rockers PearlJam, then for me it'd be passionate. Having survived the grunge era of the early 90's, an era which saw the end of the likes of Nirvana and Alice In Chains, Veder and his merry men have continued to blaze a trail through to the current day, releasing albums that, despite slowly diminishing in quality, have still showed fleeting glimpses of promise. Critics will state that the 'real' PearlJam died after the release of their second full length 'Vs' in 1993, but I beg to differ; simply because the bands music began to lack the raw aggression that fuelled their early releases, doesn't immediately mean the quality had therefore gone. 'Yield' and 'Binaural' in particular displayed a group of friends that still loved what they were doing, and granted, they weren ...

return was lost on me from day 1. After a release of such magnitude, the only thing that can be expected is for the band to just disappear and return in 2 or 3 years time with something on a level pegging. Nirvana did it with In Utero and PearlJam did it with Vs, but Green Day unfortunately, didn?t do it. The band aren?t the ones to blame either, they would never have dreamed of using Insomniac as a quick buck, a way to cash in on the crest, but in the corporate world of rock - it?s not about what the band wants.
Anyway record company aside, Green Day tried their best to follow Dookie?s lead, and well, gave it a decent fist but still fell short. ?Armatage Shanks? for starters, is the best song on the record, as well as easily being one of the bands finest to date. Its one of the few songs that you could genuinely imagine sitting on a par ...

Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals); Stone Gossard, Mike McCready (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Dave Abbruzzese (drums). Recorded at The Site, Nicasio, California and Potatohead Studio, Seattle, Washington. VS. was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Daughter" was nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, and "Go" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance. Although it topped the pop charts and sold 5 million copies, Pearl Jam's stunning second album is unknown to much of the rock audience. Recoiling from the octopus-like grasp of the music industry, the group refused to support VS. with either videos, singles or a major tour, and rock radio was given just two acoustic-powered ballads, "Daughter" and "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town," as so-called emphasis tracks. The former was about a sexually abused young girl promising to rise above her past, the latter about a forgotten woman with nothing but long gone memories. The rest of the album rocked significantly harder--harder and more raw, in fact, than anything on TEN--and zoomed in on a cusp between those two stories, on moments when outlaws, outcasts, the dispossessed and the disaffected were being called to political judgment. The woman sheltering a "Dissident" gives in and turns him over to the police. But the abused subjects of "Go" and "Rearviewmirror"--two of the album's most musically heroic songs--manage to turn the tables and get away. There was a suffocating bleakness to much of VS. (in "Rats," humans are compared most unfavorably to those animals) that would have dragged down a lesser rock band. But singer Eddie Vedder had the support of one of the most transcendent of all classic-rock bands, with a supple rhythm section and two creatively complicated guitarists equally at home with the thrashy pulse of "Go," the delicate prettiness of "Elderly Woman..." (check out the layered, stereo guitar work there) and the new wave angularity of a song like "Glorified G." It was serious, but also serious rock and roll.
