Pantera’s second album was one of the greatest rock albums ever made. It’s an incredible album with non-stop hits. It contains every thing anyone could ask for. It has pumping hard core instrumentals with “F**cking hostile” from the slow songs which they do great. They paved the road for many other bands. While this wasn’t their best album it does go down as one of my favorites. When I go places no matter where I pop in this 11-track album. Now this is my first album I will be rating so I will explain to you my simple scoring method. First I break down all the tracks into paragraphs and I rate each individual track and at the end I’ll take out my trusty calculator and find an average.
Track 1: Mouth of War The intro is very important in an album. In a rock album it’s supposed to get you pumped and deliver the mood of the CD. This track delivers that exactly. It talks about those people that talk behind your back about stuff that isn’t true. Great instrumentals. This song isn’t the best but it does its job. It shows that this album will pack a lot of vengeance and power. Score: 4
Track 2: A New Level This track packs a lot of anger. Showing that they have gotten stronger since they came along and they really had. Though this is another good track I don’t feel it’s one of their better ones. Great instrumentals. They speed up during the verses while slowing own for the chorus. Not their best work but definitely up there. Score: 3
Track 3: Walk This was the most popular track on the album. Mostly because it’s Rob Van Dams intro music for ECW. It’s a good track and letting the person this song is dedicated to know that Phil (vocals) doesn’t mess around. There is a catchy guitar rhythm and chorus. The lyrics pack a lot of power. Phil talks about a friend that he has no interest in and he tells him to have respect for those whom are better and walk away. This track has a similar feel as the first one. Score: 4
Track 4: F**cking Hostile This is an impressive song with it’s driving instrumentals and fast paced vocals. He talks about the people who are pushing him. Once again similar to tracks 1and 3. I love this song though it’s short. They clearly state that they rule and the other small ones are under their enormous shadow. Score: 5
Track 5: This Love Starts off slowly talking about a love that never existed. He never wanted to be with this woman but: love was twisted and pointed at you” say it all. Then the hard chorus comes in. He says that this person made him unhappy so he took his life and left love with her. The mixture of slow songs with the hard core chorus make this one of their best. The instruments switch up greatly and a great solo at the end make this on unforgettable. Score: 5
Track 6: Rise Talks about a revolutionary rise. What their group is I’m not sure but they form the south so it’s the red neck rise to power. Great driving instrumental. Vocals are intense as they talk about their plan to be in power. They talk about forgetting the past and concentrating on the rise of power. This is also an awesome track. Even though this sounds a bit confederate like it’s still a great song. Score: 5
Track 7: No Good (attack the radical) This song talks about what’s wrong with America. It says to know where you stand. It has it’s little rap part. Talking about violence in your city. They say to forget about race and now where you stand. I also enjoy this track but it’s not as good as some of the tracks on this album. Still Great instrumentals and vocals. Score 4
Track 8: Living in a Hole I like the intro on this song. It lasts for a good while before the vocals kick in. The vocals are pretty well done in this one. There are some really profound lyrics in this one but they don’t all hover around one issue. Except the evolution of Phil. Good song. Score 3
Track 9:Regular People (conceit) One of my favorite tracks on this album. The guitar intro lasts for about 1 minute but it’s well played by Dimebag Darrel. This is another song that packs power. Phil is saying that he’s been on the road that all these wannabes have been on. He’s telling them to keep there distance but they lack the testicular fortitude to be like him. I love this track because he tells those suckers where they stand. Score: 5
Track 10: By Demons Be Driven This is one of their best. They talk about the fall of the youth of this generation. The instrumentals are at an all time high in this one. He says that religion is old now and that all this generation is under the influence of demons. The chorus is really good as the versus. This is one of their best works ever. I really like this track. Score: 5
Track 11: Hollow This shows the softer side of Pantera. Phil talks about the death of his best friend in this emotional song. He writes that the death came so suddenly. At the funeral he reminisces about his departed friend. They keep the slow bit for a while then they switch to the harder side while still keeping the sad vibe. Now he lets His pain out with anger. I love this song, one of heir best if not the best. Score: 5
This album is one of my favorites and I would recommend it to anyone who likes rock and with an open mind. This album is well worth the cost of the CD. I must have for a fan of Heavy Metal. Though I have many friends that don’t give this album a shot I think everyone should at least hear this album through once.
Advantages: Awesome songs and vocal style Disadvantages: None
This is, put quite simply, an amazing metal album. Released after their first label debut "Cowboys From Hell", "Vulgar" ups the ante in everyway. Gone are the Rob Halford screams and glam-rock tendencies of "CFH". Vocalist Phil Anselmo delivers a more brutal, aggressive vocal style which suits the harder music perfectly. The great thing is, the vocals are still very defined and clear which really adds to the experience of this album.
The trio of ... ...Drums and Rex Brown on Bass combine to make an earth shattering and precise musical explosion, containing some of Pantera's Best work. The album has variety without being a mish-mash of styles, it is a focused record where every song has that distinct Pantera sound. They coined the phrase "Power Groove", well this album is the definition of that saying.
The album explodes from the start with one of my favourites "Mouth For War", containg a great ...

Advantages: Classic Anthems - Walk, F*cking Hostile. The Price. Beats The Crap Outta Linkin Park Disadvantages: NONE Sucka! it's sheer gold
Hello All! it's Andy again, back with another mind numbingly boring opinion....wait, I was only joking, it'll be good really. As I'm here stuck in Australia and college doesn't start for another week, I've decided to write again, for all you lucky people. This time I have decided on the musical talent of Texan band Pantera and their aggresive style.
Now as you know I'm not a big fan of the newer Metal of today. Things like Linkin Park really make ... ...metal back in the days. Pantera kicked off their career in 1991 with their debut album, Cowboys From Hell, which got rave reviews and led them to fame. Vulger Display was their second effort and was much more musically sound than the first effort and led them to more success. In my opinion none of the further releases could touch this one, as great as they were.
Pantera consists of:
Phil Anselmo - Vocals
Diamond Darrell - Guitars
Rex - Bass

Advantages: Christ on a bike it's heavy Disadvantages: widdly-woo guitar solos
Back when this album was released in 1992 Pantera were called 'power metal' but today I suppose it would be dumped in the category of nu-metal even though it still piss' all over most of todays nu-metal scene in terms of sheer power and aggression.
I suppose it is some kind of tribute to this album that for years after it's release there were endless guitar samples from many of it's tracks appearing on virtually every heavy industrial album being ... ...sound that Pantera have managed to produce for these tunes. It defies belief that such a compressed slab of sound could have ever been vomited forth from any normal guitar as it sounds more like some kind of incredibly heavy nasal hoover noise than anything else. The guitars on this album have such crushing weight and precise driving energy that it's hard to believe that they were ever actually played instead of programmed.
Unfortunately the thing ...

Advantages: a face melting blinding onslaught of rage and menace for the metal head Disadvantages: heavy but basic riffs will leave technical sophisticates unimpressed
The cover is a photo of some band members face being punched, in black and white. No colourful and artistic paintings here I'm afraid. The cover says it all. The music-when played loud, is like a hard punch to the face.
The cd inlay (booklet) is typically metal inspired showing the lead vocalists tatooed topless body and his angry expression. Another photo of dimebag lashing out some riffage is also there. All the lyrics are included as if hand ... ...cd disc itself is a beautiful holographic silvery lettered piece of artwork, which is translucent and changes in colour when light shines on it. Cool ! (when my mobile phone flash shines on it, it goes a magical blue!!)
If you love heavy, hard, punchy, grinding metallic rock music with an angry edge then you will love this album. (If you don't, then read no further):

Advantages: Hard Fast Metal Disadvantages: Not For The Family Picnic
...new breed of metal. Vulgar Display of Power is a beast of an album that back in 1992 was the cutting edge of metal and was the sort of music that your neighbours would hate. The first track says it all "mouth for war" imagine one of the scariest blokes you have ever seen screeming that at you. Great isn't it? The most popular track on thee albulm is "walk" at one time all the clubs would play it 3 or 4 times a night. A few years ago when Pantera ... ...to be vicious but actually tell us to sit down and chill, racism and hatred won't work. My favorite song is "Fxxking Hostile" its fast and furious but thats not out of tune with the rest of the album. Vulgar Display of Power is a must for metal fans. ...

I think i like this song soo much mainly because of the addictive guitar riffs and the lyrics of the chorus. Also the general sound of the track makes me wanna shout "Hell Yeah!" at the top of my voice! It's just one of those awesome, feel-good kinds of heavy metal sounds.
11. Hollow
As the softest song on the album, i really admire this track, becuase it shows how Pantera can vary their sound and also...

Advantages: Brutal and great riffs, has elements of Pantera Disadvantages: might resemble pantera too much for some people, not much originality
...The first Throwdown song i heard was Holy Roller, being a Pantera fan i was impressed, it sounded like they fused songs from the Pantera albums VulgarDisplay Of Power and Far Beyond Driven. Some criticise them for copying Pantera but i am glad that they , it is much needed in todays metal. And Holy roller is really the only song which songs like a straight up Pantera clone, some songs on the album also resemble the sound of Hatebreed; and other parts it seems they have their own sort of sound.
The whole album is filled with crushing riffs and strong choruses, the guitar work is really fresh, the singer is impressive, especially on Holy Roller where he strongly resembles Phil Anselmo. I will definately be playing this album for a long time. If you like Pantera you should probably check this out, if your a metal head i think its...

Advantages: Excellent thrash metal Disadvantages: None unless you don't like the genre (quite a few, I imagine!)
...Thrash metal suffered a bit of a blip at the end of the 90s and early millenium but Exodus is a band who came back early with 2 strong albums in Tempo of the Damned (2004) and Shovel Headed Killing Machine (2005), this third album cements a solid comeback this decade for the band headed by guitarist Gary Holt. It's the second album to feature the vocals of Rob Dukes.
The Atrocity Exhibion A is thrash metal at its best, long and brutal tracks are carved out by killer riffs, awesome shredding and tough lyrics to match. "Funeral Hymn" is an immense number that just seems to get better and better as it goes on as well as the more times you listen to it! "Bedlam 1-2-3" starts off at a slow pace with a damning bass line and builds up to a raucous frenzy, the vocals are pretty wild and remind me a little bit of Macabre or Pantera on Vulgar...

Album Notes: Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Recorded at Pantego Sound Studio, Pantego, Texas. With a rougher image and a more focused, aggressive sound than in their hairspray and spandex days on an independent label, Texas natives Pantera made a serious dent in the heavy music scene with the major label release of COWBOYS FROM HELL, which inspired radio play and MTV support. While Metallica and Megadeth were watering down their approach for a more mainstream sound, Pantera got harder with VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER. From the moment vocalist Phil Anselmo screams his first "Revenge!" in "Mouth for War," the stage is set. Drummer Vinnie Paul showcases relentless technical prowess thrashing out complex double-bass drum patterns in "A New Level" and "By Demons be Driven," while guitarist Diamond Darrell's seemingly endless supply of hard-grooving, blues-inspired hooks are the heart of "No Good" and "Live in a Hole." In the emotional power-ballad "Hollow," the song's protagonist faces the heartache of having a friend trapped in a coma; and just as in the epic "Cemetery Gates" from COWBOYS FROM HELL, Anselmo continues to struggle with the consequences of fate and the will of the world.
Album Reviews: Q (7/01, p.90) - Included in Q's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time" - "...Pantera's new, heavier direction...was succinctly summed up by 'A New Level's sludge-thick chorus and the neck-snapping riffage of bile-flecked hate anthem 'F***ing Hostile'..." Entertainment Weekly (3/6/92, pg.59) - "..one of the most satisfying heavy metal records since Metallica's early-80s cult days...11 caustic songs of unabashed brute force...a fully realized album that goes way beyond metal's usual crunch-and-burn.." - Rating: A
