Advantages: Fantastic characters with simple storyline - laughs for anyone Disadvantages: Myabe some discontinuinity in peripheral characters
I am writing this review as a huge fan of King of Queens, and because after watching all complete 9 series. A lot of people wrote off the show after watching a couple of episodes in the first series. Unbeleivably, this was a huge msitake. The King of Queens grew to be an Emmy nominated American sitcom that ran from 1998-2007. The program also won 2 peoples choice awards, and two actors won image awards and an emmy for their performances.
"Intro and plot of show"
The King of Queens follows the life of Doug and Carrie Heffernan (Kevin James and Leah Remini) who live in Queens with Carrie's father Arthur Spooner (Jerry Stiller) lives in the basement downstairs, after his house burnt down.
Doug is an average parcel delivery driver working for IPS. He is the epitome of the average man, quite large and loves his food. His mannerisms ...
Advantages: Superb production, fascinating footage, great music Disadvantages: None whatsoever apart from wanting more
others. Some of the conductors featured are Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Thomas Beecham, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Richard Strauss, Leopold Stokowski and Bruno Walter to single out a few names.
Right from the opening of the documentary you realise the high quality of the production values on this DVD as Beethoven's 5th Symphony segues seamlessly between different performances by very different conductors. Hearing the same piece conducted by Toscanini, von Karajan, Klemperer and Szell heightens the contrasts between the styles and interpretations of each of these highly individual maestri.
One of the big plus-points of this DVD is that along with copious extracts from performances and rehearsals, one is given complete performances of several works including Beethoven's "Egmont Overture" conducted by Serge Koussevitzky ...
Advantages: Good action sequences, interesting moral ideas. Disadvantages: Terrible (and I mean terrible) acting, disjointed.
and themes. The alien's enforced segregation and mistreatment so clearly reflecting the issues that have occurred in South Africa over the years. It obviously a subject close to native South African fledging Director Neil Blomkamp's heart and kudos to him for attempting it. However, this does not forgive the fact that large parts of this film are bloody awful.
Take the aliens for example. How dreadful are they! They look like something out of Doctor Who. Not even the modern Doctor Who either. We are talking Tom Baker era special effects here! The whole thing is very much low budget made for television sci-fi. Now I like my B-movies as much as the next guy but they have to make up for it with a decent plot and acting and for me District 9 has neither. A strong theme and an interesting moral undercurrent? Certainly but it is lacking a decent ...
