Advantages: an enjoyable plot and convincing dialogue well executed, good photography and direction. Disadvantages: historically and politically naive
I had never previously heard of this film before watching it, and wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover a charming, well-executed romantic historical tale which moved along with sufficient aplomb to keep me entertained from beginning to end.
The film is set in the British Isles after the fall of Rome, and the Irish are warring with the fragmented tribal states of England. Against this backdrop the film depicts a love story between the English Tristan (James Franco) and the Irish Isolde (Sophia Myles)- after falling into a coma and thought to be dead, Tristan is set out on a burning funeral boat across the channel and ends up washed ashore on the Irish mainland, where he is nurtured back to health by Isolde, the daughter of the sly and machiavellian leader of the Irish tribes. They fall in love, but Isolde ...
Advantages: All the qualities of a Ridley Scott movie Disadvantages: not promoted enough, for people to know this is awesome
Tristan & Isolde is directed by Ridley Scott. Besides being a quality film maker, He has also successfully tried his hand at historical pieces before, in films like Gladiator. So here we have Tristan & Isolde, a film based on Celtic Folk-lore. The beauty is that some sources claim the story is based on truth and others, claim based on myth, so the viewer is able to decide for themselves. Personally I say irrespective this is a fantastic movie. I watched this initially on the pictures. I got fed up waiting for the DVD release so that I could see it again, so I bought it from Amazon.com. The story unfolds a little like Shakespeares Romeo & Juliet but is also a lot more deeper than that.
The Roman empire has finally been forced from the shores of Britain, and the land is divided into different squabbling tribes, such as Saxons, Pictish ...
Advantages: Cute guy's, few bits to cry at, good music Disadvantages: A Little predictable and slow to begin
If you are looking for a story with substance, look elsewhere, if you are just looking for a good love story that will possible have you shedding a few tears, your in the right place. It stars Sophia Myles (perhaps just before she began to get a little more famous - James Franco and Rufus Sewell (who has a a wonderful voice by the way).
I shall try not to spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen it yet but Tristan and Isolde is a well known story, extracted from a very old poem and various translations and very much in the vein of Lancelot and Guinevere's. But having read a recent translation/interpretation of the story things have been rather re-written to fit a "movie" criteria. It has the essential "love triangle", but it has a loveable wronged man, and a loveable "lover" and the girl is very pretty and just trying to make ...
