Advantages: Lots of brilliant stuff Disadvantages: Some not-so-brilliant stuff, "Revolution 9"
...fingers!" make this one of their best.
The blaring sounds of "Helter Skelter" are followed by the barely-audible "Long, Long, Long." This Harrison composition is actually quite good if you can hear it, and the ghostly wail at the end is really weird but cool. The slow version of "Revolution" (the B side of "Hey Jude"), "Revolution 1," is next. "1" is more bluesy, and it features Paul and George singing background vocals of "Shoo-be-doo-wop." This version was actually recorded first, but somebody thought it wasn't fast enough. I like the way Lennon says, "Don't you know that you can count me out - in" on this one.
"Honey Pie" is a charming 1920s-style tune from Paul. The lyrics are about a working girl who goes off to Hollywood, and the music is very oldies, with a piano and a brass section. It's impossible not to love it when Paul says...

Advantages: It's The Beatles, of course Disadvantages: Will always suffer from being compared to Revolver
.... During the Rubber Soul sessions, the Beatles experimented with the fuzz bass effect, and they use it here to full advantage, with Paul McCartney doing the honors. Lyrically, this song is just another step in the development of George Harrison as a songwriter--it's not outstanding, but it hints of future accomplishments like Taxman and Something.
6. The Word--Paul McCartney again plays piano on this one, accompanied by George Martin on the harmonium. John Lennon sings the lead vocals, with some fine harmonies contributed by Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Just what "The Word" is I don't know--it could be "love" or "good". At any rate, the song has a somewhat bluesy feel to it, and it gives us a little insight into another, slightly different style of music that this band could play.
7. Michelle--Next to Yesterday, this is probably...

Advantages: Stone has a great voice Disadvantages: But it's a predictable pop-r 'n' b sound
...a Bowes and Morley rock-soul song, although it calms down into a fairly straight funk-pop number. In parts, it sounds like a slower version of "Super Duper Love" musically, although some of the vocals make it sound like the kind of material Mariah Carey was performing after she turned more towards r 'n' b. It's a shame, as the funky backing deserved more than that.
"Killing Time" has the same laid back funk intro as Girls Aloud's "Deadlines and Diets", which is a bit of a surprise. However, it turns out to be a good thing, as the song continues in that vein, as a down tempo, laid back funk-pop number. Again, it's a track that would have slipped onto "TheSoul Sessions" very easily, but at least the modern r 'n' b influence seems to have disappeared for this one.
There's a trippy kind of intro to "Sleep Like a Child" that reminds me...
