The release of Waiting, the Fun Boy Three’s second album, dispelled any doubts about the group’s future after a difficult year in which they had had a flop single and Lynval Golding had been viciously attacked. The eight months spent writing material for the album were seen to have been well worth it. Produced by Talking Heads leader David Byrne and with arrangements by ex Ravishing Beauty Nicky Holland, Waiting offered a series of strong songs convincingly played in a wide variety of styles, from uptempo tracks like We’re Having All The Fun to reflective pieces such as Things we Do. The album also gave the group a number 10 hit single with Tunnel Of Love.
The Fun Boy Three had been a major debut, but Waiting was a massive step forward, establishing them as a major force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, they were soon to be finished as Terry hall left to start a solo career. It was a terrible shame, very reminiscent of the feeling when the Specials had collapsed after just two albums. The Fun Boy Three will be remembered for two glorious albums, with Waiting being a remarkable piece of work.
