If you have seen the film Walk the Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and loved the music in the film then you may want to buy the soundtrack as it is just as great. & even if you haven't seen the film but love great foot tapping country/ Rock 'n' Roll songs with some slower country/blues ballads mixed in then this may be for you too.

I thought the film was absolutely amazing and so went out and bought the soundtrack the very next day. I have loved Johnny Cash's music for a long time but do not have any of his cd's. One of the great aspects of the film was that the singers all did their own singing and nobody mimed a word. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are so convincing as Johnny Cash and June Carter that when I put the cd on, it could almost be the real thing.

Tracks:

1. Get Rhythm - sung by Phoenix. A great start to the cd (and to the film) and one to get singing along to.

2. I Walk the Line - again sung by Phoenix. This is a much slower song but one of Cash's most famous which may be why the film was named after it.

3. Wildwood Flower - Reese Witherspoon. A beautiful song, slow and great to just sit and relax to.

4. Lewis Boogie - Waylon Malloy Payne. Another great one to dance to, has Rock 'n' Roll vibes to it as well as country.

5. Ring of Fire - Phoenix. This one is one of my favourite Cash songs and I think Phoenix does it justice. Another slow one but still great!

6. You're my Baby - Johnathan Rice. I havent heard of this song before but it is another great Rock 'n' Roll style song.

7. Cry Cry Cry - Phoenix. Definately a foot tapper.

8. Folsom Prison Blues - Phoenix. This was the first ever Johnny Cash song that I ever heard and I instantly fell in love with him when I heard it.

9. That's All Right - Tyler Hilton. Another Rock 'n' Roll song, reminded me a bit of Buddy Holy's style.

10. Juke Box Blues - Witherspoon. This is one of my favourite songs on the film and on the cd. Everytime I hear it I can't help getting up and having a little dance (even If I'm at home on my own - yeah, sad i know!)

11. It Aint Me babe - Phoenix and Witherspoon. I love this song and its the point in the film when you realise just how strong Cash's and Carter's feelings are for each other.

12. Home of the Blues - Phoenix. A good old country/blues song

13. Milk Cow Blues - Hilton. A great one to dance and clap your hands to!

14. I'm a Long Way from Home - Shooter Jennings. A slow, soulful song.

15. Cocaine Blues - Phoenix. I loved this one in the film and glad to have the full version on cd as you only hear a part of it in the film. Another foor stomping tune.

16. Jackson - Phoenix and Witherspoon. I hadn't heard of this song before but I live it and it was while they were singing this song together that Cash (Phoenix) asked Carter (Witherspoon) to marry him.

I bought this cd in HMV for £14.99 which is expensive I know but wanted it too much! You can however, get it from Amazon from £6.95 or from Ebay from about £8. It would probably also be a bit cheaper in Tesco's or Sainsburys than what I paid for it but I was too impatient!

The cd cover and inlay is fairly typical for a soundtrack cd. It does not contain any of the songwords but gives a description of credits to each song. Also has pictures from the film of Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix and of the great Johnny Cash himself.

One of the parts that I liked best about the inlay was 'A Fan's Notes' on the last page by David Wild who talks about the legends of Cash and Carter and the making of 'Walk the Line'. I'm not going to go into too much detail about what he says, but I will include the last paragraph as I thought it was a great description of why the film and the cd exists:

'This movie and this music stand not as any sort of replacement for the great Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, who are surely and rightly missed. Rather, it is offered as a vital, unflinching and finally loving tribute to a shared passion that burned within two people - and to a musical passion that changed American music for the better and forever'

I apologise for not providing you with more information but the film was a lot easier to review than the cd. I guess the main thing to say is that if you're not a fan of Country/Rock 'n' Roll style songs then I would steer clear of this cd unless you lave seen the film but If you love a good foot tapper, something to sing and dance along to and maybe have something slightly different in your cd collection then you may like this cd.

Thanks for reading!

I must admit to not really understanding why anyone would want to buy a CD of two people trying to sing like Carter and Cash, but by the sounds of this review their impersonations are pretty spot on. I think I'll stick with the originals myself, but some of the cover interpretations look to be interesting.
