Advantages: perfect pop songs, mature, amusing and catchy Disadvantages: slightly dated production
This album contains some of Brain Eno's most commercial songs ever and some of JohnCale's most atmospheric lyrics ever. Recorded in 1990 at Eno's home studio the sessions began amicably enough but by the end the two men were hardly speaking as Cale began to resent what he saw as Eno's constant tinkering with perfectly good recordings. The daggers between the faces on the album cover reflect this tension.
However none of this is apparent when listening to the record. Without doubt one of the cheeriest albums I own there is a perpetual sunny atmosphere throughout, which occasionally spills over into outright goofiness. The absurdity of the sea shanty "Empty Frame" is infectious and I defy anyone not to grin along with the tune. But somehow it avoids embarrassment and silliness.
Other highlights include one of Eno's most romantic tunes ...
Advantages: Attractive foliage, many uses Disadvantages: Suckers, roots, brittle branches
The Locust Tree, Latin name - Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia', also commonly known as False Acacia, can usually be found towards the front of any garden centre or nursery tree display.
A bright, attention grabbing tree, it effortlessly lures in the unsuspecting buyer looking for something to bring cheer to a dull corner of their garden.
At first appearance, a very attractive tree, with yellow-green pinnate leaves, dark stems and creamy white racemes of flower. A hot favourite for a splash of colour next to the veggie patch!
But, be warned, this tree has not been named Locust for nothing. It looks fairly innocent to the untrained eye, but once planted in your carefully manicured lawn, it exclaims ah, ha, and rapidly puts on a spurt of growth which rivals the good old leylandii hedge.
Capable of reaching 40 ft in 20 years ...

Many years ago on a holiday to the Isle of Skye I discovered I had forgotten to pack my walking boots! A trip to the Island outdoor shop was necessary and after trying on several different makes I finally opted for a pair of Merrell walking shoes. Fast forward almost a decade and I can honestly say these were the best pair of shoes I have ever bought. Sadly after walking many miles my shoes had started to show their age! A few months ago I decided it was time to buy a new pair. Having had such a positive experience with Merrell I knew I wanted to stick with the brand.
A trip to my local Milletts revealed a few styles in the Merrell range. I have fairly skinny ankles and so find that high walking boots tend to rub my ankle bone. For this reason I wanted a trainer like walking shoe. I didn?t want anything to heavy either .The Merrell ...

Album Notes
Personnel: John Cale (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Mark Deffenbaugh (stratatone & piccolo guitar, harmonica); David Tronzo (electric guitar); David Byrne (guitar); The Soldier String Quartet (strings); Ben Neill (trumpet); Erik Sanko (bass); Ben Perowski, Maureen Tucker (drums); Hassan Hakhmoun (Moroccan drums); Ibrahim Hakhmoun (metal castanets, drum); E.J. Rodriguez (congas, percussion); Tiye Giraud, Napua Davoy, Susan Didericksen, Joanne O'Brien, Eden Cale, Daisy Lignelli, The Lafayette Inspirational Ensemble (background vocals). Recorded at Sorceror Sound, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Released in 1996, WALKING ON LOCUSTS was John Cale's first solo album of new songs in over a decade. In the interim he recorded several collaborative works, including SONGS FOR DRELLA with old Velvet Undergound mate Lou Reed and WRONG WAY UP with Brian Eno. He also released a live set, FRAGMENTS OF A RAINY SEASON, which explored selections from throughout his career. This album is a delight from beginning to end. Cale has long delighted in mixing a deceptively cheerful-sounding delivery with darker underlying imagery. Guests include Maureen Tucker, David Byrne, and the Soldier String Quartet. The quartet appears on "Gatorville & Points East" and the beautiful "Set Me Free," a song that features a pedal steel guitar that weaves through the sonic curtain of bowed strings. There are numerous songs that are catchy, mesmerizing, and haunting. "So What" and "Entre Nous," with their chorus vocals, are two such pieces. This is a superb album and an essential title in Cale's catalog.

NME (10/12/96, p.51) - 4 (out of 10) - "...we are in the Talking Heads-sponsored land of super-slick, pensive pop here....A wise man once said that most people would rather own up going to an adult cinema than listening to an adult pop LP....it's not hard to see why. Entertainment Weekly (10/04/96, p.62) - "...Cale nicely merges his baroque melodic consciousness with his still-sharp pop instincts..." - Rating: A-
