High expectations surrounded the release of this album, what with half the band having being involved with the highly popular inde/punk-revivalist band The Libertines. And for the most part, Dirty Pretty Things did not disappoint.
Carl Barrat, who formed debatebly the most exciting British writing partnership since McCarthy and Lennon, with Pete Doherty, fronts with exciting indie outfit with his trademark swagger and cunning lyrics.
Blistering Libertine-esque tunes like "Bang Bang You're Dead" and "Deadwood" form the back-bone of this gritty album, with their screeching guitars and lively, yet slightly slurred vocals.
The album taks a slightly slower tone with tracks such as "Wondering", which may not be to the taste of the average Libertines fan.
Amongst the cluttering of sublime songs, there are a few duds. One song that may be considered to let the album down is "You Fucking Love it"... which at best is an energetic sub-2 minute rant... and at worst, Sham 69 descending into their most shambolic... Having said that, some listeners may enjoy the raw energy and attitude of the track (something that I can't really deny myself.)
Whereas some songs carry on the Libertines tradition, as I have already mentioned, I must say that there are some quite unique and original tracks that build on that great tradition, and carry it forward with a rebellious sneer.
One such track is "Gin and Milk". A passionate masterpiece sung from the very soul a torn young man, with blistering instrumental (the bass is particularly prominent in this song.) For me, this is the best track on a general very, very good album.
Comparisons with that over "splinter" band that formed from the ashes of the Libertines is inevitable. In my opinion, Waterloo to Anywhere trumps anything that Doherty and Babyshambles have produced over the past few years. The maturity of the lyrics, and the punchy, sweaty musical style of Dirty Pretty Things is far superior to Doherty's pseudo-poetic ramblings and mediocre instrumental arrangements. Although, some are bound to disagree....
Overall, if I were to sum this album up in 3 words, I'd have to say: Lyrical; Drunken; Passionate.
These qualities make this more than the average album in today's industry where over-production and manafacturing hits are commonplace.
Any fan of the Libertines would do well to buy this album, as it ranks up there with the best of the Libertines work, and at times, even surpasses them.

Advantages: Lyrically, musically and vocally catchy-punk rock outfit with much acclaim. Disadvantages: I just dont find this band to stand out from the crowd nor have much originality.
