Album Notes: The ninth album from legendary Swedish progressive metallers Opeth is a typically engrossing affair, taking in generic shifts from pummelling metal to jazz to more avant-garde instrumental explorations. Another large step into uncharted waters for the band, they still manage to identifiably sound like the same authors as previous records, but still make stylistic lunges to continually move forward as a group. Dualities of progression and old-fashioned riffage make for a very entertaining and varied metal album, sure to delight existing fans and lure newcomers alike.

Advantages: Thought provoking, inspinational Disadvantages: none
...by Porcupine Tree's Steve Wilson, is mostly heavy (with heavy riffs and bellows); but part of this song is occupied by light, eloquent guitar strings and singing. Elsewhere, "Harvest" is a pretty, acoustic driven semi-ballad, and "The Drapery Falls" puts more light, acoustic strums alongside dreary, harmonic vocals, but also some staccato, electric guitar riffs. "The Dirge For November" is cut into two pieces: the second half is heavy, but the first half is so light and restrained, you can actually hear Mikael breathe in. Next, "Funeral Portrait" rockets into pounding riffs, and "Patterns In The Ivy" is an instrumental, acoustic and piano ballad which is as beautiful as it is docile. Finally, with fast, propulsive riffs, the album ending title track (a personal favorite of mine) returns Opeth to their heavier, death metal roots. Finally, the limited...

...got this cd and dvd and its brilliant. if you can get your hands on it and youve been to the concerts then the dvd is a great reminder of what they performed like. better value for money buying the dvd and cd, the dvd is live at the ABC in Glagsow and the cd is just there album not live. brilliant tunes and a brilliant group altogether. as the group have only really came on the scene in the past year this album is great tribute to the fans who have followed them from the start. it also has henrietta and creeping up the backstairs on the video that has been shown on the music channels.
would highly recommend this pack if you can get it, it is also a limitededition. i purchased this at £8.99 this was from HMV online. There first relase creepin up the backstairs is on it, with henrieatta and chelsea dagger, also with there new song...

Advantages: Expansive, beautifully crafted, musically moving Disadvantages: Once hooked, it's difficult to give Opeth up...
...Brutal and agressive, with beautiful melody and atmosphere. Indescribable except as an exceptional metal album, spanning genres from black metal to classical and folk. The Progressive elements which have since become more prevelent in Opeth's albums really came to the fore in this release from 1999. There also feature nuances of a far "jazzier" Opeth than seen previously (or subsequently, though I await my first listening of "Watershed" the album due for release in mid-2008 with baited breath).
As with other albums by the band "StillLife" has a concept, one I won't spoil for new listeners by revealing, other than to say it has a tragic overtone, told with Shakespearean stylings. "Serenity Painted Death", coming towards the albums climax, is pivotal in the tale, and is also, in my opinion, the best track on the album, and I'd go so far...
