Advantages: some great clips, well designed package Disadvantages: frustrating editing of some clips, repeated material, much padding, not enough music!
Jimmy Page really set the bar high with the recent Led Zeppelin DVD. That set was a faultless document of a 70s supergroup throughout its entire career, and here we have another "Dinosaur" group from those halcyon days, the "Classical Rock" pioneers EmersonLake & Palmer, attempting to cement their place in Rock History for posterity via a marathon trawl through the visual archives.
Do they achieve it? Well, yes I suppose they do...except that in my opinion, the place they have cornered for themselves is marked "Novelties and Musical Jokes".
Yes folks, welcome to the EmersonLake and Palmer show. A four hours plus, double disc Gift from the Gods/ Horrific monstrosity, depending on your view of Progressive Rock music.
First impressions (in-joke intended) are favourable, though I must admit to being surprised it was only a double set ...
of the two only sure things in life and all that. Hence the horns that announce the start of this piece.
So to 1976. The forgotten men of prog, Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg "I Believe In Father Christmas" Lake (guitars) and Carl Palmer (bass), who lets face it, did have a tendency to take themselves a little bit too seriously, record this magnum opus, taking the opening and stretching it in that manner so beloved of 70's proggers.
It's got a great rolling bass line, the timing is perfect, just as you would expect from classically trained musicians, and the trio get their groove on to a T. This is just a fabulous example of good musicians letting the jam take them where they want to go. The musos among you might even recognise the fade out as being copied by Nick Cave on The Birthday Partys "Release The Bats", ask me if ...
Advantages: Neighbours & Strangers Talk. A Day Off Work. Fun In The Snow. Disadvantages: I hate snow! I Pay For Lunch. No Busses Running.
ALTERNATIVE TITLE: THE DAY THE SNOW CAME
"In myback yard?"
Well yes indeed, very much so. After all, once snow plays havoc with the local and national transport system one really has little option but to discover, or in some cases re-discover, exactly how big ones back yard is and just what it contains that may be of use or general interest.
On Monday, 2nd February 2009, much of the South East of England ground to a slippery, shivery, freezing white halt. During the week that followed most of the rest of the country too experienced what we now regard as "freak" weather conditions. Rather amusingly I thought, the Met Office website was forecasting a further "significant weather event" for Friday of the same week, here on the Sussex coast that turned out to be no more "significant" than a heavy downpour of rain.
Many older ...

Album Notes
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). British import edition, digitally remastered. Recorded on a tour that took the band around the world in 1973 and '74, WELCOME BACK is the definitive live ELP document, capturing the pomp and circumstance of the seminal prog-rock band in all its glory. Initially released as a six-sided LP, WELCOME BACK contains eight lengthy pieces (how's that for ambitious). The more song-oriented, Lake-composed ballads are combined in a medley ("Take a Pebble/Still You Turn Me On/Lucky Man"). Otherwise, epics are the name of the game. From the pseudo-classical "Tarkus" to the classic three-part "Karn Evil 9," ELP's technical mastery and complex compositional abilites are finely showcased. Also in evidence are the band's showmanship tendencies (including lots of gonzo instrumental grandstanding) which are sheer rock & roll bravado.
