Stead.Additional personnel: Brianna Corrigan (vocals); Gary Barnacle (saxophone, flute); John Thirkle (trumpet, flugelhorn); Peter Thoms (trombone); Pete Wingfield (piano, keyboards); Mel Wesson (keyboards, drum progamming); Martin Ditcham (percussion).Producers: Mike Hedges; John Rowley.Engineers: Ian Grimble; Dave Meeghan.Formed from the ashes of the Housemartins, The Beautiful South became one of England's most successful bands. Released in 1989, their debut, WELCOME TO THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH, introduces the band's style. Musically, the songs are often deceptively sweet sounding, while lyrically brutally sardonic, even cruel. This combination keeps their records extremely edgy and sometimes uncomfortable, though there's no denying the band's skill. A perfect example of this is Woman in the Wall, which is musically energetic and triumphal, though its lyrics owe something to Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, telling a horrifying story of spousal abuse that results in murder. Other standouts include Song for Whoever, which starts as a sweet love song before the narrator confesses that the song was written for at least 10 different women, Straight In at 37, which takes a couple of memorable potshots at popsters Simon Le Bon and Paul Young, and the epic Love Isa, featuring three different vocalists, including Briana Corrigan, who eventually became a full-fledged member of the band.[Reviews]The Bob (Fall/90) - ...any fan of classic pop will find this record hard to resist...n
broke up after just two albums, P.D. Heaton tried a similar technique with the Beautiful South--lush melodies, rolling piano, and beautiful voices sugar-coating delightfully subversive lyrics. Only where the Housemartins railed against bankers and unthinking sheep, the Beautiful South moved from the political to the personal (except for some delicious swipes at the music biz), writing gorgeous love songs to dull partners ("I Love You But You're Boring"), gruesome murders ("Woman in the Wall"), and conversation fear ("You Keep It All In"). Funnier still is "Song for Whoever," which reveals the man behind the love song: "Oh Shirley, Oh Deborah, Oh Julie, Oh Jane/I wrote so many songs about you/I forget your name." --David Daley

Welcome To A Great Band Review ofWelcome To The Beautiful South - Beautiful South (The)by

Advantages: great tracks, the first album of a brilliant band Disadvantages: a couple of weak tracks
I have been a fan of Paul Heaton since the days of The Housemartins. He is a very talented singer and songwriter, creating some poetic lyrics and singing them with emotion and feeling. A lot of his songs come from his personal experiences, so the degree of feeling he can put into singing them is probably understandable.
This is The Beautiful South's first album and features eleven tracks. It begins with Song For Whoever, which is very catchy and ... ...its theme of love and how fickle it can be.
My personal favourite on this album is I'll Sail This Ship Alone, which is a beautiful tune too, especially with the violins, which accompany the moving lyrics well. I have the 12" single version of this too, which is even more impressive.
You Keep It All In and The Woman In The Wall are the highlights of Side Two of the album, but there are only a couple of weak tracks and as usual, I would recommend ...

Paul Heaton at his best Review ofWelcome To The Beautiful South - Beautiful South (The)by

Advantages: Fantastic...quality. Disadvantages: I spose, if you have COUTC...many songs are on this from that.
I have been a big fan of the beautiful south and never really saw this album as a hit. Then I borrowed it off a friend...and what an album!! Lyrically, it is sublime...look no further than "The Woman in the Wall" - a song which is really sick and saddistical, but the vocal talents of Dave Hemmingway, make it one of my fave south songs. Nearly every song on this album is really well written, catchy and still rating above other songs on some other ... ...also features, and people who bought "Carry on Up The Charts" should still invest in this, just for the greater renditions of that, and also "sail This Ship Alone". Well worth buying, even after 12 years, if your a south fan, you should have it...and if your not, buy it anyway!! ...

Welcome indeed Review ofWelcome To The Beautiful South - Beautiful South (The)by

Advantages: Original with great classics Disadvantages: One or two songs not the best
Well this was the first album from the Beautiful South and it still holds it head up high as probably the very best one! It includes the hit songs Song for Whoever, You Keep It All In and I'll Sail This Ship Alone, all great songs that are moving, passionate with great vocals and backing.
Great lesser known songs are the slightly dark Woman in The Wall (which is one of favourite of all their songs), and Have You Ever Been away.
Definitely an album ...
