based on its title alone, suggest that this quartet wear their Northerness on their sleeve. But rather than producing yet another tired Oasis or Stone Roses pastiche, the Music decamped to the distinctly un-Northern town of Atlanta, Georgia to work with renowned rock producer Brendan O'Brien (best known for working with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden). The results are thrilling--an over-the-top, bombastic album that often manages to combine the rock power of Led Zeppelin with the epic psychedelia of Jane's Addiction (helped by frontman Robert Harvey's vocal similarities to Perry Farrell and drummer Phil Jordan's breakneck drumming, reminiscent of Stephen Perkins). And though the lyrics occasionally venture into pretension (really, who says "mine eyes" anymore?), they're made forgivable by the power of tracks like "Freedom Fighters" and "Bleed from Within" (which even boasts a drum solo). In fact, the only outright homage to their Northern indie heritage is "I Need Love", with a danceable, New Order-esque bassline that drives the whole thing along. But generally, they stick to their guns instead of their roots, makingWelcome to the Northa great rock album.--Robert Burrow

It’s been about 2 years since The Music burst into the mainstream with their self titled debut album. It was to be the start of a quick rise to prominence as the band introduced a fresh look at dance/rock crossovers. With the debut album and a superb live show they won a large number of cult fans and saw them plastered over NME et all, proclaimed to be the next big thing. They took an extended break after Reading Festival last year and now a year later have returned.
This album is the reason for their return and for the last year they have been trying to create something to rival the 2002 debut. At the time the album was fresh and the band were really pushing into a new territory. As I already mentioned they have a sort of Indie rock/dance hybrid style, which works well for them. A lot of other bands who tried it to the same extent as The Music seem to have failed, but somehow they’ve made it a success. The result has seen them headline both Dance and Rock festival stages, a feat most Indie bands could never manage.
They were just 18 when they released one of the best albums of 2002 and now 2 years later they seem to have done it again. “Welcome To The North” is more like a continuation of the bands debut album rather than a follow up. It still sounds as fresh as the debut, adding an air of maturity to their work but sounding just as good. It’s unusual for such a young band to make one album that makes so many people sit up and take notice, let alone 2 albums.
The band themselves didn’t do too much planning for this album and once in the studio spent just 7 weeks recording. To help them they enlisted the help of former Rage Against The Machine producer Brendan O’Brien and set about their work in Atlanta. The process wouldn’t be easy though as they were trying to follow up an album that went gold in 3 different countries. This was the result and the more mature sound of The Music seems to suit them well.
Even though they have had global success it hasn’t changed them much, the euphoric guitar riffs are still very much in evidence. They back every track with a solid drum beat that really leads the track in the right direction and also gives it a slight dance vibe to it. Each track has it’s own edge but still sounds un-mistakenly like The Music. The youthful enthusiasm is still their with a large number of tracks having a very fast pace that really makes the album a joy to listen to.
One misconception about the band is the link between them and their Indie roots. It’s obvious from every track that they draw heavily on Oasis and The Stone Roses as influences but they open up their songs to a wider audience. The introduction of an almost dance beat using cleverly constructed bass lines really gives them the chance to draw from a larger listening audience. They are certainly an eclectic band, drawing influences from all sorts of places but still staying true to their Indie roots. Everything is done using instruments rather than samples and electronic sounds and this gives the album a more complete and fulfilling sound.
The vocal talents of Rob Harvey are the real selling point of the album. His vocals suit the lyrics and musical style perfectly. Even when they slow things down he seems to have a wide range of vocal talents that can stretch to most styles. It’s from this point that it’s clear that The Music have another hit on their hands.
The single, “Freedom Fighter”, really sets the tone for the album but in fact it’s probably one of the weaker tracks on the album. That’s really more of a testament to the album as I though that “Freedom Fighter” was excellent when I heard it originally. I found though that the album had a number of gems on it such as “Bleed From Within” and “Into The Night” both of which are superb tracks. If you’ve heard and liked “Freedom Fighter” then this is certainly an album worth buying.
They’ve managed to live up to the reputation they set themselves with the first album and with the more mature sound The Music seem to be getting better. They have taken inspiration from their travels over the last 2 years and their new perspectives on live having been out there doing what they have for the last few years. This is certainly my album of the year so far and I think it’s going to be hard to tople it from that accolade. I suggest everyone attempts to hear something by The Music, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Welcome To The North: 5 minutes 10 seconds.
A good opening to the album, the guitar riff gives you a feeling of hostility and fear. 'Show me the knuckles baby' suggests ... ...a good opener.
8/10
Freedom Fighters: 3 minutes 44 seconds.
The first song to be released off the album, and what a choice it is. Powerful guitar riff during the verses and the chorus, topped off with good lyrics and beautifully timed drumming. Fabulous song.
9/10
Bleed From Within: 6 minutes 27 seconds.
This is my personal favourite from the album. The most original song on the album, it reminds me briefly of 'Paranoid Android' by Radiohead ...

Advantages: Some Killer Riffs Disadvantages: Dissapointing compared to their Debut Album
Do you remember The Music? There was a time when they were being hailed as the future of British music, with the release of their debut album, it seemed as they were on the cusp of world domination. But then, nothing followed.
But now they're back with their second album, "Welcome to the North", working with produced Brendan O Brien.
The killer riffs are still here, as we've heard from their first single from this album, Freedom Fighters, which ... ...a great pace.
But on listening to the album, there's something missing. Fans of their debut will have loved the dance music influence in their tracks, and this has gone. Instead, it sticks to a tried and tested rock formula, the band no longer seem to be doing their own thing, and trying to copy someone elses. Instead of the giant repeating riffs of "Getaway" and "The Truth is No Words", we have a more tried and tested Verse Chorus Verse format.

Advantages: Better than the debut Disadvantages: Not by much
Ok, first off, please dont get me wrong I like The Music. When I first heard the first singles I thought they were the next best thing and to an extent they were. However the songs on the debut album were, to be honest a bit hit and miss, but on the second album they did a much better job.
The thing about the second album is that it starts off wonderfully, the title track it fantastic and Freedom fighters makes me fell like i'm back in 1995 mucking ... ...of white lightning! Then, to me it all goes horribly wrong.
From 'Cessation' the Album changes tempo and becomes much slower than you would expect and gets rather creepy in places but maybe thats just me. The Music still manage to keep their style though which is a hard thing to do, and everyone I played the album to recognized the style.
Robert Harvey's voice is the one thing that stay's true more than anything and to me is definately the saving ...

Advantages: Rocking indie like a stone roses revival Disadvantages: not much
When i first saw the new Music video - 'freedom fighter' - i thought i recognise this band. Low and behold it was the Music who everyone thought had split due to an over pretentious, egotistical frontman (like so many before - stone roses, the verve + een guns and roses to an extent). The video though sturred something within me with a head nodding riff that made me want to dance like bez on speed. So imagine my excitement when i got this album for ... ...on full blast, (Christmas morning 01.00am). Rocking out to the whole album is a must. It seemed like every song had the catchiest riff that seemed all so familar, but i couldnt put my finger on it. Either way, if you like to head bang to a steroid sooped up happy mondays esque band, then these boys are for you ...

Advantages: Some rip-roaring electro rock classics with astounding lyrics from this Leeds based band Disadvantages: Possibly an acquired taste, the sound is very different to most present bands
Opening on the gentle strains of a guitar before balsting its way into oblivion the title track "Welcometo the North" is the perfect introduction to this album. Like The Music's first album this has the near metal tones of guitars being played with the utmost vivacity and skill, coaxing rhythmic melodies and blasting chords out of their instruments with delicacy and fusing them with a dancetrack of beats. This strange fusion of dance and metal either works for you or it doesn't, I am yet to meet anybody who doesn't either love or hate this band, but it's well worth a listen. The vibrant strains of Freedom Fighters contrast beautifully with the clear U2-esq opening of Bleed From Within and whatever your taste in music you will find something to be passionate about on this album.

Advantages: it totally rocks! an underrated album. Disadvantages: hard to find disadvantages... er... perhaps not very diverse.
fashionable album gimmick nowadays, e.g. The Music's 2004 album "WelcomeTo The North") known just as "HIM 666" (I think it was actually an early demo of "The Heartless"). They were a bit obsessed with the Number Of The Beast (copyright Iron Maiden?) on this album as it has 66 tracks, is 66 minutes and 6 seconds long, and has a lot of 666 in the lyrics ("Your Sweet Six Six Six" obviously, but also "For You" has lyrics like "In six hundred and sixty-six ways I love you"...)
So, in conclusion, "Greatest Lovesongs Volume 666" was a good start for an excellent band, often heavier, grittier and rawer than much of their later stuff but still laying down the foundations for their "love metal" style. Only 9 "proper" tracks but they're all quality and show potential. ...

Album Notes
Recording information: Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia. With WELCOME TO THE NORTH the Music re-tools the dance-oriented vibe of THE PEOPLE EP for a leaner, harder sound. The chunky guitars and keening wail of lead singer Rob Harvey on the title track opener, for example, prove in no uncertain terms that the Music is here to rock. Interestingly, a reference point for WELCOME TO THE NORTH seems to be arena-tailored 1970s and '80s hard rock. The undulating riff and anthemic chorus of "Freedom Fighters," for example, nod to Guns N' Roses and Whitesnake, while "One Way In, No Way Out" recalls Metallica at their most melodic. But the crunch and thrash of these songs is only part of the band's complex stylistic formula. The Music is still steeped in the legacy of British post-punk, as on the hypnotically swirling "Fight the Feeling" or "Bleed From Within"'s rumbling atmospherics. There is some of the band's signature groove in the bouncing rhythm of "Breakin'." The nervous, hi-hat-driven "I Need Love" has a distinctive New Wave flavor. The band boils these influences down on WELCOME TO THE NORTH, creating a sound that is familiar, contemporary, and packs a serious modern-rock punch.
