Kasabian have always had an electronic element to their sounds, buttheir tongue-twisting ... more
third album showcases this part of theirsound, with one track being described as sounding like 'Daft Punkand The Clash together'. The album is also more psychedelic thanprevious efforts, mirroring close friends and touring partnersOasis' most recent record, Dig Out Your Soul. Produced by Americanhip-hop producer Dan The Automatic, who is best known for his workon the Gorillaz' first album.
Kasabian arrived with a bang and a half early this century, brandishing a slew of ever ... more
more dynamite singles and a rigorously assembled debut album that straddled dancefloors and festival fields with monumental ease and a glint in its bloodshot eyes. It was all very post-Xtrmntr, whilst avoiding much of the seriousness that could have entailed. Whether anyone expected them to chase Oasis coat-tails with such keenness is by the by now; they have since been ordained as an anthemic rock colossus of the UK rock scene. That has almost certainly gone to their heads and as years and albums pass they move further away from their original chemical reaction and into attempting to elbow their way onto the table of some of the greats--early Pink Floyd (the well meaning, but slightly aimless "Swarfiga"), The Kinks (the blatant "Thick As Thieves", though it doesnt take much to imagine Noel Gallgher bashing it out either) and The Rolling Stones ("Happiness", see also Primal Scream). West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum finds them in an exploratory mood even if it struggles to lift off like either their own early material or the greats they aspire to emulate. Still, "Fast Fuse" is a rabid burst of tinny psychedelic punk and "Vlad The Impaler" intriguingly dark and electric. Not as weird or as wired as they purport to be, but given the kind of brain-numbing predictability normally peddled by bands at their level, we should be grateful for the ambition of this album. --James Berry

Advantages: A Few Really Good Tracks, Great Ending, Great Opening, Good Sounds With Each track Mixed Well Disadvantages: Poor Tracks In Middle Of Album, Some Shoddy Vocals In Some Songs, Some Songs A Little Dated
kasabian return with their long titled new album WestRyderPauperLunaticAsylum, but with 2006's Empire being a tough act to follow, Kasabian had a lot to follow from.
The album is much more grungy and dance based than Empire and is filled with some great songs. Most which have also been enspired by cowboy western vibes.
Underdog - The album starts off with a bang as the the waves of bease fururisticly beat and then comes in the great grungy guitar riff that is not only catchy by so cool sounding and it will get stuck in your head. The song as a whole is very good and the guitar is the best part, it never really changes and is the guitar most of the way through with only slight changes, but that is forgivable as the guitar is awesome and this is one of the stand out songs of the album.
9/10
Where Did All The Love Go? - This ...
Advantages: Another excellent album with big beats and offereing something new and fresh Disadvantages: It will take time to get into it
first listen and while a lot of the album took a bit of time to get into, I found an instant connection with "Underdog", "Vlad The Impaler" and the album's first single "Fire".
It's in tracks like "WestRyder Silver Bullet" and "Happiness" that the more experimental side of the album really comes out. In particular now I've found that I prefer a couple of these, slightly different tracks to the more traditional Kasabian tracks. In fact "WestRyder Silver Bullet" has a very hypnotic sound to it that seems to really make it appeal. It's a far more complex track and with a combination of effective vocals and haunting guitar riffs it works incredibly well.
Overall I think it's fair to say that this is another solid release from the Leicestershire boys. I'll admit that whilst it wasn't the instant hit the first 2 albums had been there is ...
Advantages: Some great tracks, very catchy Disadvantages: perhaps a live track would of topped it off nicely
Back with a bang indeed, Kasabian look set to take over from oasis as the uk's best band. This, their third album, is probably their best, both musically and produced.
2 tracks have already been released as singles, "fire" and "where did all the love go?" and have had great chart success, however they did release "vlad the impaler" and "fast fuse" a few years back with no promotion whatsoever. Id expect "underdog" to get a release sometime soon.
Underdog happens to be the first track on the album, probably one of the best tracks on the album aswell, full of catchy lyrics, synths and guitar riffs, Tom's vocals really shine here and he shows why he's a great front man.
Vlad the impaler is a personal favourite of mine, starts off with a hendrix style guitar riff which just sets the tone from the off, will sound great live no doubt ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Sergio Pizzorno (vocals, guitar); Tom Meighan (vocals); Tim Carter (guitar, keyboards, percussion); Ian Matthews (drums); Dan The Automator (programming). Audio Mixer: Dan The Automator. Recording information: Lookout Studios, San Francisco, CA; Orangutan Studios; E-Land Mig Studios. Photographer: Andrew Whiston. Cinematic and moody, celebratory and hedonistic, the Leicester-based band's third full-length album touches many bases, from lurching, Vaudevillian dramatics ("Thick as Thieves") to emotive, Stones-y ballads ("Happiness," "Ladies and Gentlemen Roll the Dice") to Madchester-derived disco-punk workouts (first single "Vlad the Impaler," "Fire," "Underdog"). But the stand-out may be the previously released garage-raver "Fast Fuse," which takes a straight-ahead rocking approach and shows off guitarist Sergio Pizzorno's terse but effective riffing.
