I performed this muscial in 2000 and bought the CD for the purose! You cannot help singing along to classics like "I like to be in America" and "I feel Pretty". The cast are naturally exceedingly talented and when dancing along it is nice to pretend you are the one singing!

Some songs are comical for example "Officer Krupke"

Some or Sinister for example "Cool"

Some are full of anticipation "Tonight"

Some are full of Pride "Jets song"

Some are full of dreams "Somewhere"

There is definately something for everyone regardless of whether you are a hardcore musicals fan or a musical hater. Not all the songs are soppy or sad and the tunes are catchy and make you tap to the beat!

I would recommend this as a musical and as a CD as you can follow the story more or less through only the music. The story is a typical Romeo and Juliette tale. Tony (Romeo) falls for Maria (Juliette) and they are members of rival gangs the Jets and Sharks respectively. When Maria's brother finds out there is all hell to pay, ha challenged the Jets to a best fighter verses best fighter but then at the fight things get out of the hand and Bernado (Maria's brother) kills Riff (Jet leader) and Tony kills Bernado and then has to run from the poilce. As with Romeo and Juliette the end is tragic and young love is wickedly cut short.
