Looking through all of my albums recently I have re-discovered my collection of Westlife albums, which I will admit I have added to as each new album has come on sale. Now I am well aware that Westlife aren't everyone's favourite band and their remakes of classic songs and on stage 'moves' don't exactly go down well with some people. Saying this however I am one of those peoples that find Westlife quite enjoyable to listen to. Their albums are easy to pick-up and I usually find that I like most of the songs on them. Maybe this is because they are a band that can actually sing and to be honest I don't think I can say that there is one Westlife song that I have truly detested.
Westlife are an Irish pop band that were formed in 1998 with five members Shane, Bryan, Kian, Nicky and Mark. They were signed by Simon Cowell and are currently managed by Louis Walsh. Since their formation the bands music has greatly evolved and moved from teen pop to contempary adult music. In 2004 Bryan left the band to
work on solo projects but despite rumours the rest of the band carried on performing and are still performing today. Together the boys have released - albums, sold more than 40 million records worldwide and gained 14 number one singles in the UK Their albums are; Westlife, Coast to Coast, World of Our Own, Unbreakable, Turnaround, Allow us to be Frank, Face to Face, The Love Album, and Back Home. It is their first and 4x platinum album Westlife, released in 1999, which I will today be reviewing.
Track list 1. Swear it Again 2. If I Let You Go 3. Flying Without Wings 4. Fool Again 5. No No 6. I Don't Wanna Fight 7. Change The World 8. Moments 9. Seasons In The Sun 10. I Need You 11. Miss You 12. More Than Words 13. Open Your Heart 14. Try Again 15. What I want Is What I've Got 16. We Are One 17. Can't Lose What You Never Had
Now although this is Westlife's first album it is definitely my favourite. Maybe this is simply because it brings back quite a few early childhood memories when I listen to and therefore I have positive associations with it. This put aside however the album is still fantastic in my opinion and the songs on it top-class in my opinion. To save you however from the pain of having to read my dissections of each song on the album I am only going to give details for a few. Now I normally just choose three songs to write about but I simply couldn't choose those three and so I'm afraid I've ended up with four (and that was a tough choice).
POSITION 1 - Seasons in the Sun (Track 09) Seasons in the Sun is by far my favourite song on this album. With I Have A Dream this song reached was the Christmas number 1 of 1999 and it stayed at the top spot for four weeks. In brief the song is a goodbye from a dying man to his wife and parents and upon listening to it you realise how poignant some of the lines really are. The song it's self is a ballad but this doesn't stop it from having quite a punchy tune and a memorable chorus. Maybe because the lines are so delicate and touching this song has a soft and floaty sort of feel that really suits Westlife's overall style.
POSITION 2 - No No (Track 5) No No is a one of the more upbeat songs on the album, in fact it is probably the most upbeat. It has a much quicker pace than all the other songs and is quite fast paced in places. I think the reason I like this is because it is different to most of the other tracks and therefore stands out because of it. This said however the lyrics themselves are very good and the vocals as usual very strong.
POSITION 3 - Try Again (Track 14) Is a more relaxed track compared to the previous two on the album and therefore stands out for this reason. The start of the track also has a rather Irish sound to it and so suits the band down to the ground. The lyrics themselves are ones I always remember although I'm not sure why. The backing track is quite soft and subtle in places but this really suits the song as a whole due to the fact that it allows the vocals to express the emotion of the song.
POSITION 4 - What I Want Is What I've Got (Track 15) This track has quite a punchy opening and a strong and steady beat throughout. In my opinion this song is a true pop ballad with some cheesy pop lines as well as some great harmonies that blend together to make a classic song.
Now I'm sure that if you've read this far you really don't want to read any more song dissections and therefore I'm going to stop. That is of course after I've said that this album really is brilliant and that listening to it after such a while as really reaffirmed this for me. I would therefore highly recommend this album, which can be purchased in most music outlets as well as online.
