Additional notes

Album Notes: Rare groove is the stuff that killer record collections are built on: obscure R&B, jazzy funk, and funky soul plucked from the deepest and dustiest of crates. Of course, not all listeners have the time, patience, or cashflow to go musical spelunking for old-skool gems. With that in mind, Rhino's superb four-disc box set, WHAT IT IS - FUNK SOUL AND RARE GROOVES: 1967-1977, takes care of the hard part and offers 91 tracks of deep, sweaty funk from the genre's heyday. While a number of the artists will be familiar to the average fan (the Commodores, Rufus Thomas, Labelle, Little Richard, among others), many more won't (Cornell Dupree, Cold Grits, Black Heat, Society's Bag, United 8, etc.). Of course, obscurity is the name of the game here: It's not hard to find a DJ spinning "Brick House," but Little Sister's "Stanga"--included here--is a different bag all together. Wallflowers beware, and "all the squares, go home"

STAXS OF SOUL
Review of Stax Story, The - Various Artists by  Mauri

Advantages: Well compiled collection
Disadvantages: Not all best tracks included

...Stax is one of the most famous Blues and Soul record labels, which was responsible for recording some of the best known artist of that genre. It was formed in Memphis in 1957 by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton as Satellite records but changed its name to Stax (a play on the owners surnames STewart and Axton). It will always be associated with the development of Southern Soul, Chicago Blues and early funk as well as recording some of the first ethnically mixed bands, something very rare in that period. The label finally went bankrupt in 1976 but Fantasy Records eventually bought it primarily for its superb back catalogue and since 2004 they have been re-issuing some of the more popular recording s as well as some compilations. ‘The Stax Story’ is a massive four cd compilation of the best of the output from the famous Stax record label... The Original Soul Sisters
Review of I'm A Good Woman Vol.1 (Funk Classics From Sassy Soul Sisters) - Various Artists by  waynehorrigan

Advantages: Soulful, genuine, funky, rare
Disadvantages: None

...Knight). But don’t let this hitherto anonymity of the artists put you off. With no reputation to cement or live up to, there are fourteen women here who are singing for their supper. 1968-1974 was, for soul music, a golden age when ideas were in abundance and the merest groan or howl of a black female on vinyl had the artist tagged as a diva. Everything here is impossibly funky. With some of the beats and the rhythms, you can see how the sampling culture of late 80s hip-hop artists caught on so rapidly: there is much booty here for those crate diggers. So what of the individual tracks? Well with so much attitude going on here, I’ve marked the tracks out of five and, due to the constant message of these tracks, I have given a YKSMIWSS (You Know She Means It When She Sings) reference too. Hold onto your afros, we... Read review

More Heart, Less Soul
Review of Mind Body And Soul - Joss Stone by  Soho_Black

Advantages: Stone has a great voice
Disadvantages: But it's a predictable pop-r 'n' b sound

...vaguely of Portishead. For the most part, however, this is a fairly standard piano led pop ballad, which Delta Goodrem could easily have recorded. As with a number of songs on the album, the only distinctively different sound is the slight edge to Stone's voice, although the song does seem to drag by the end. There follows a ten minute wait for the bonus track "Holding Out For a Hero", which sadly isn't worth that long a wait. It's a piano led pop ballad, again quite similar to a Delta Goodrem song musically, but with Christina Aguilera on vocals. Unfortunately, after the promise of a new soul influenced pop sound that was "The Soul Sessions", Stone has done what I most feared she would. On "Mind, Body & Soul" she has become a copy of pretty much every other artist in the pop-soul and r 'n' b genres. On most of the tracks here... Read review
