To Say, the debut from series runner-up, Gareth Gates. It's idol album number two (three if you count Rik Waller's), and it's released just in time for the Christmas shopping frenzy.Boasting a hefty 16 tracks with the singles all tucked at the beginning, this is hard going at first but despite the inevitable fillers, it's a pretty consistent collection. Gareth and his team have covered most bases for their target audience, doing pastiches of artists such as Atomic Kitten, Kylie, Westlife and most notably (where Gareth excels) George Michael. "Sentimental" is a fine funk-tinged pop song but could easily be mistaken for classic George on a dark night. This is surpassed by the standout "Good Thing", which is also influenced by the Wham! man but has a touch of the soulfulness that Will Young could have done with on his debut."(I've Got No) Self Control" is a great piece of disco pop that should keep the Kylie kids happy and Gareth (whether assisted or not) sounds in great voice showing a lot more confidence than he did during the earlier part of 2002. So that's the positive side, the downside is that a fair few of the 16 songs are mere fillers where similar results could be attained with a cheap keyboard's demo button. Nevertheless, there are enough decent songs to make it worthwhile. --Georgina Collins

When I first listened to this album I found that is quite easy to listen to, it’s not really the sort of album ... ...Sentimental, 4 Suspicious minds, 6 What my heart wants to say and 8 Too serious too soon. Sentimental, is I think definately a song that Gareth should release in future. It is a higher tempo song and would be different from the slow songs that he usually releases. Suspicious Minds, everyone should know this song, it is a cover of the classic song by Elvis and I think that Gareth sings the song very well. The pop idol programme has produced a number of new ‘pop stars.’ Some do have some talent and some don’t. Not everybody agreed with Will Young winning the title of Pop Idol and thought that maybe Gareth Gates should have won it instead. I watched the programme every week and did want Gareth to win, but coming towards the end of the series I had changed my mind and voted for Will to win. They have both done really well since the series ended and have both had a number of number 1 singles.
At the end of 2002 Gareth Gates released his first album called ‘What My Heart Wants To Say’ Many people rushed out to the shops to buy it, but I decided to wait before buying my copy, and I eventually brought it in the January sales. It cost £8.99 from WHSmith.
The album has 16 songs on it, they are a mixture of cover versions and original songs. Alot of people have critisised the Pop Idol programmes because it creates pop stars who do lots of cover versions and cannot write their own material. Well this is the case with Gareths first album. Gareth only helped to write one of the songs on this album which is number 3 Sentimental.
The songs on the album are-
1 Unchained Melody 2 Anyone of us 3 Sentimental 4 Suspicious minds 5 Downtown 6 What my heart wants to say 7 good thing 8 Too serious 9 It aint obvious 10 With you all the time 11 (I’ve got no) self control 12 Tell me one more time 13 Alive 14 One and ever love 15 Walk on by 16 Thats when you know
When I first listened to this album I found that is quite easy to listen to, it’s not really the sort of album that you would play if you were having a wild party. There is a good mixture of ballads and songs with a faster tempo on this album.
My favourite songs on this album are 3 Sentimental, 4 Suspicious minds, 6 What my heart wants to say and 8 Too serious too soon. Sentimental, is I think definately a song that Gareth should release in future. It is a higher tempo song and would be different from the slow songs that he usually releases. Suspicious Minds, everyone should know this song, it is a cover of the classic song by Elvis and I think that Gareth sings the song very well. What my heart wants to say is another favourite, it was released last year and got to number 1 in the charts. The Long and Winding road, the duet which Gareth sang with Will Young is not included on this album.
For people who like pop music and were a fan of the Pop idol programme I would recommend listening to this album. I will buy another album from Gareth Gates if he releases any more in the future and I hope that he does well in his music career.
Advantages: Many tracks Disadvantages: Typical manufactured stuff
...a good tune. 6. What My Heart Wants To Say
7. Good Thing
8. Too Serious Too Soon. I think this reflects Gareth throwing away some of his childhood. I think it was an achievement to get this far but to quit while ur ahead is a move that must be done before the criticising comes in.
9. It Ain’t Obvious. This song is a low key fill-in number that has been thrown together at a fast speed. Ok.
10. With You all The Time. I think Gareth here displays ... ...I think a crush is apparent. Perhaps on Britney?
11. I’ve Got No Self Control. I think this song is fun. It embodies Gareth's wild side which we did not see on the show.
12. Tell Me One More Time. Gareth has a lot of passion in this song. Keep up the pace a little more if I was to improve this album.
13. Alive. Yeah this song is nice to play with the girls whilst having a good old natter. Very young and very listenable if you like this style of ...

Advantages: Nice mix of styles and themed songs.Upbeat.Has some covers of old pop songs some might like. Disadvantages: Unforgettable-generic pop at best.Nothing special musically, lyrically or vocally.
What can I say, if you thought I was unkind about Will Young (who I actually do like 10 times better than Gareth Gates) then perhaps don't read any further. Gareth Gates, who competed with Will Young in Pop Idol, was later signed by Simon Cowel. And although I am not a fan, I think this was a good business move. This is about as nice as I can be about Gareth Gates' musical career. I think die hard teeny bopper pop fans will have appreciated the efforts ... ...in his career, I dont think it is likely. In this album he covers 'Unchaned Melody' and to his credit, he can sing in tune, but his voice (though melodic) is highly regular and unimpressive. There really isn't anything memorable or distinguishable about it (unlike Will Young-who at least has a clearly distinguishable voice). I disliked 'Unchained Melody' originally anyway but I feel that Gates has really knocked the little magic the song originally ...

Advantages: Gareth Gates, whats bad to say about him. Disadvantages: Can you think of any? I certainly can't.
So what do you personally tink of the Gareth Gates? Cute, sexy, ugly? It depends on your taste really, and by bringing out this song and watching the video to it, does it mke the butterflys go round in your stomache or is it the sespool of sick beneath your throat? I have had lots of dibates at college on the topic f Gareth Gates. Of course his single before this one "Unchained Melody" was a brilliant hit, nobody could ever sing it better than him ... ...think this single dragged him down from his career? I personlly think that Gareth Gates can sing any song, any place, any time. His single for red nose day was simply the best I had heard in ages, Im not suprized if he lifted you off your feet in that one girls because he is a charmer. There is my opinion on Gareth Gates, I dont normally go for that baby look type but I know I would give up a lot of stuff to spend one day with him. I am no bif fan ...
