Long gone is the hey day of Brit pop, but for some reason everyone seems to have at least one Oasis album in their record collection and more often than not that record is (What?s The Story) Morning Glory.
This was the second album brought to us by the monobrowed mancuinians and it is probably their most famous as well. At the time I bought it was without doubt my favorite album. Yet now I would hardly ever listen to it, as I grew bored of it due to the singles being played non stop for over a year on the radio. I was glad to find once I listened to the album after about a year and a half of not listening to it that there are a couple of really top quality original songs.
Firstly there are the great songs which were released as singles. Roll with it, Wonderwall,Some might say and Don?t look back in anger. These were all brilliant songs but unfortunately they were over played far too much and continue to be on VH1 at least once a day.
Roll with it was a great ?pub? song which could have been sung by groups of drunks due to its chorus triumphant sound.
Wonderwall was a fantastic acoustic guitar song which had a depressing feel to it. Even so it has great lyrics which do a complete about turn halfway through the song. This works well and it also doubles the length of the song.
Some might say was a pretty good song but it wasn?t one of my favorites. Although it does have a brilliant intro, good harmony between Noel and Liam and the usual high standard of lyrics.
Don?t look back in anger was possibly the most popular song from the album, and it is certainly one of my favorites. This was the only song that Noel Gallagher did lead vocals for. Apparently he wanted Liam to do them in the beginning. Thank goodness the rest of the band wouldn?t allow this as it works far better this way.
Other good songs from the album were She?s Electric and Champagne Supernova.
She?s electric was a funny song about a girlfriend and her rather bizarre family. This song has the best lyrics in the whole album and a great beat and fine guitar interludes. The chorus is also really well suited to Liam Gallagher?s voice.
Champagne Supernova was the mammoth seven minute track at the end of the album. It featured a guest appearance from Paul Weller on lead guitar and backing Vocals. It is a mellow song reflecting on friends and relationships.
Other interesting pieces of information about this album include. In ?Hello? the Hello, Hello I?m back again bit was taken from Gary Glitters terrible song Hello. Even more interesting is the dedication of Cast no shadow to ?the genius of Richard Ashcroft?.
There are two completely useless tracks (6&11) and if you know what they are about please write a commentary about them.
This is actually a really good album and if you like Oasis and for some bizarre reason you don?t own this album you should really go out and buy it right now but if you don?t like Oasis you won?t like this album.
