What’s the story morning glory?

The pinnacle of Oasis’s career to date and in all likelihood ever. This was from the time that Oasis were being proclaimed as perhaps the Macunian version of The Beatles. That time seems like ages ago now, this album however still sounds as fresh as the day I bought it.

This is definitely a classic album, despite how much some people loathe Oasis, they did do some incredibly good songs. Latter albums however have reeked of Noel trying too hard to try to beat ‘What’s the story morning glory’. Perhaps if Noel relaxes a bit and concentrates on writing good songs rather than merely average ones he could maybe one day write an equal to this album. Oasis are in dire need of having the spark back, anyways enough of me talking about Oasis’s recent shortcomings and on with the review of this album:

1. Hello

A good opener for the album, sadly tarnished by an unfortunate sampling of a song sung by a despicable idiot who used to wear a lot of Glitter. Despite the unfortunate sample, this song is excellent. Musically it starts off with the same riff as from Wonderwall before the noise comes in. Liam’s singing is so finely matched for this song, Noel sings backing and adds the harmony needed to counterbalance Liam’s powerful yet rough sounding vocals.

Lyrically this song is good, the best lyric from it reminds me so much of my teenage years (around 16) when I used to go out every week and often ended up walking alongside a canal bank suitably inebriated singing Oasis songs with my friends at the tops of our voices; on our way to the City Centre.

“We live in the shadows and we had the chance and threw it away
And it’s never going to be the same,
Because the years are falling by like the rain”

9/10 (would be 10/10 if it were not for the sample!)

2. Roll with it

This was from a time when Noel wasn’t obsessed with fancy effects and chord sequences and instead concentrated on penning some catchy pop/rock/indie tunes. This is a very unsophisticated song and is the better for it; this is an ideal sing-a-long track. Musically it does its job and is pretty raucous.

Lyrically it’s nothing groundbreaking, but there is something suitably magical within them for me. I can’t explain the magic exactly; there is certain energy within them. Also it evokes memories of the chart battle they had this vs. Blur’s Country House. Blur won.

Best lyric

“But you know I think I recognise your face,
But I’ve never seen you before”

8/10

3. Wonderwall

A song that couldn’t be anymore different than the last song if it tried. This is definitely a timeless classic. Some people will think I have lost my marbles in describing an Oasis song in that way, I don’t think I have.

The lyrics are beautiful. The title was swiped from George Harrison (indeed he made an album with this title). Apparently, and this may not be 100% true, George got the title from Ringo Starr who used to remark that something was Wonderwall, instead of Wonderful.

Musically this is also a classic, from the guitar introduction, to the drumming that is powerful yet doesn’t interfere with the melody of the song, to the more unusual backing sounds. Liams singing is also wonderful on this song, he doesn’t have the best voice in the World, but it can convey a lot of emotion whilst at the same time keeping the rough Indie Rock image.

Best lyric:

“Backbeat the word is on the street,
That the fire in your heart was out”

10/10 and then some

4. Don’t look back in anger

Perhaps Oasis’s most well liked song besides Wonderwall. Lyrically it works very well, with lyrics that as is par for the course for this album are just made to be sung. Musically this song works extraordinarily well, with an intro taken straight from the John Lennon song ‘Imagine’ to start off proceedings. Slight orchestration, is added onto guitars and drums to create a sonic tapestry that compliments the lyrics and Noels wonderful singing to a tee.

Best lyric: (taken from a saying from John Lennon)

“I’m going to start a revolution in my bed,
Because you said the brains I had went to my head”

10/10

5. Hey now

This song could hardly be described as the most memorable song from this album. However it is still a very good song that perhaps was included at the last minute after legal complications stopped the song ‘Step out’ from being included on the album. Basically because the music was a straight copy from a Stevie Wonder song, ‘Uptight’. The song was later released as a B-side to Don’t look back in anger with a credit to Stevie Wonder

Lyrically this song isn’t too bad, but doesn’t really shine in any way. All in all not a bad song, the music to a certain degree saves it from being a poor song.

7/10

6. (This is a 44 second sound check, reminiscent of a shorter version of The Swamp Song; a Wonderwall B-side).

7. Some might say

Another excellent song. The music for this song is just right, the lyrics are excellent and thought inducing, whilst the singing from Liam (complimented perfectly by Noel on backing vocals) make this song something special. This was a number 1 for Oasis, and it is easy to see why. Liam voice’s somehow seems to embody more harmony whilst singing this song – I love this song.

For all the people who criticise Oasis, I would find it very hard for them to come up with a reason to hate some of the songs on this album, besides not liking the bands perceived arrogance.

Best lyric

“Some might say, they don’t believe in Heaven
Go and tell it to the man who lives in Hell”

10/10

8. Cast no shadow

This song was written for the then Verve front man Richard Ashcroft. At the time it was said that he was down in the dumps after the Verve failed to make any impression on the charts. After this album of course and Noels constant plugging of them, they did have some good success. Oasis, coincidentally also bought Travis into the mainstream (something which I am grateful for).

The song itself is very mellow and dreamlike. Worthy of special mention is the way the backing vocals are done on this song – it helps make the song just that much more special. Lyrically it’s quite touching in a way, you can tell that Noel when writing the song did feel some empathy for Richard Ashcrofts position.

Best lyric

“As he faced the sun he cast no shadow”

9/10

9. She’s Electric

She’s Electric – she’s in a family full of eccentrics.

The first line from She’s Electric, sets the scene for this song well. Basically it’s a narrative based song, the lyrics take in certain family members, and is done in a chirpy fashion. It’s a great song, and like most of the songs on this album is custom made to be sung.

Best lyric:

“She’s got a brother,
We don’t get on with one another,
But I quite fancy ‘yer Mother
And I think that she likes me”

9/10 – a song from the time when Oasis could be fun, as well as musically and lyrically good.

10. What’s the story Morning Glory

The title track, this song is certainly one of the best Rock songs that Oasis have done. Plenty of guitar, drums, decent lyrics and great singing.

Having said all that, this isn’t a favourite on the album for me. I can certainly appreciate it though, and on occasion go through phases when I will adore this song.

If I had to sum up this song in a few words I would call it:

A Tsunami of noise

The sequencing in putting this song at this point in the album is spot on though, as it blends in well with the two next tracks.

11. More feedback section – this one works well though and is a good intro to:

12. Champagne Supernova

An incredible song, a truly incredible, wonderful, beautiful and potent song. The song itself sounds as if it’s drug induced, it does this without being clichéd though.

Liam’s voice is at it’s very best here, the lyrics are definitely up there with some of the best stuff that Noel has written.

Weighing in at 7 minutes and 27 seconds this is also the longest track on the album. The problem is for me, it seems too short. This is a song from an era before Noel discovered and abused the use of overdubs.

Best lyric:

All of the song is brilliant

10/10 (would get higher if it were possible).

So, if you don’t own this album – I would recommend that you go out and purchase it. Nowadays it will be very cheap, even if you are not a big Oasis fan there is certainly something on this album that you will enjoy.

This is one of the albums that should along with, Sgt Peppers, Revolver and the like, be in every serious music fans collection.

Overall rating: 10/10 the best album Oasis have ever made
