What's The Story Morning Glory is an album I have listened to hundreds of times, however not particularly recently. Last night I was at a loose end and decided to dig out some old CDs to FINALLY put them onto my iPod and found this. I know there are a lot of reviews for this on here already, and music reviews aren't something I've done much, but I'm so enjoying listening to it again I felt compelled to write about it.
I calculated that I was 10 when this came out, and I originally owned it on cassette, replacing it for a CD when they became more commonplace because I loved it so much. Although it is their second CD, following Definitely Maybe in '94 which also shot straight to number one, this CD contains all the hits I would immediately list if asked some Oasis songs.
If Wikipedia is to be believed (which it often isn't!), this is the third biggest-selling CD in album in UK history - and it has been very well received abroad too. So here's the tracks that make it so great:
1. Hello A strong, upbeat opener to the album that lets us know
what kind of standard to expect throughout the whole CD. Gary Glitter is credited as co-writing this along with Noel Gallagher and Mike Leander, but I'll refrain from making any inappropriate jokes... 8/10
2. Roll With It The second single to be released from the album, which reached number two. While I enjoy the song, it is definitely not my favourite track on the album. Perhaps it's because I've heard it SO MANY times, but I did press skip after about halfway through the song while writing this review. 7/10
3. Wonderwall This song needs no introduction, I doubt there is a person on this planet who is not familiar with it. The follow-up to Roll With It, this only reached number two but has been covered either live or in recordings by artists from Ryan Adams to the Beastie Boys. I will always prefer Oasis' version and it reminds me so much of being about 12. 9/10
4. Don't Look Back in Anger This is my favourite off the CD. It's a real sing/shout your heart out kind of track which Oasis do so well especially live, and one I never tire of hearing. It would seem a lot of people agreed because this got to number one. 10/10
5. Hey Now! I don't really like this, the first verse is so long and monotone I've switched off a little by the time the chorus rolls around. Not bad, but definitely not up to par to the rest of the album. 6/10
6. Untitled (aka The Swamp Song - Excerpt 1) The first of two bizarre musical interludes which I find somewhat unnecessary. It's only 45 seconds long, but doesn't add anything to the album. With so many strong tracks, who needs fillers? 4/10
7. Some Might Say Okay, that's more like it! This was another number one single (the band's first ever) and a thoroughly deserved one. Even though this is one of the tracks which are instantly recognisable as being Oasis by the drums and beat, it manages not to be samey and brings the level of the album back up again. 8/10
8. Cast No Shadow A bit mellower and quieter, not sure that really words too well for Oasis. While I do generally enjoy the words and tune of the song, I tend to cringe a bit when the backing vocals repeat parts of the melody in a weird high-pitched voice. 6/10
9. She's Electric This song I really enjoy. Slightly quirkier than the rest of the album and more upbeat, it's one which always sticks in my head for ages after, and I could sing you the entire thing without having it on even though I hadn't heard it for several years before today. Love it. 9/10
10. Morning Glory Takes a while to cut to the chase (long intros in a song are a pet hate of mine) but once it gets there, a nice song. Little did I know when I first heard this at the age of 10 it was written about cocaine ("all your dreams are made when you're chained to the mirror and a razor blade"). Isn't it nice to be oblivious to things sometimes? 7/10
11. Untitled (aka The Swamp Song - Excerpt 1) Again with the weird filler. 4/10
12. Champagne Supernova When this CD first came out, I really didn't like it, but over the years I've heard this now and again on television and realised it's not all bad. Having already said that I wasn't sure if Oasis are that great at slower songs, I should probably eat my words. It's a bit of an epic - 7 minutes 30 seconds - but I enjoy every bit of that now. A relaxing, beautiful song. 9/10
The average rating for the album works out at about 8 when the crappy fillers are removed, and even with at about 7.5. This is an album that has stood the test of time and reminds me of summers as a kid. You can find this CD from 88p on Amazon before shipping, and if you haven't already heard it (where have you been?) I strongly recommend you give it a try.

Advantages: The album has good songs and very interesting lyrics, also the album has an atractive cover. Disadvantages: This is not what you would usually expect from Oasis
